David Michael Smith reviews journalist Norman Solomon's War Made Invisible, an eloquent moral call to end the bloody state of perpetual war that the United States has engaged in since the advent of the "war on terror."
For more than a century, workplace democracy has been envisioned as essential for a truly democratic & egalitarian society. Democratic socialists have long held that full & effective participation of workers in the decisions made in their workplaces is indispensable for overcoming alienation, encouraging participatory democracy, & promoting radical social change. Although workplace democracy has been relatively rare in both capitalist & socialist societies, some well-known examples of workers' control or workers' self-management have been developed. We can readily recall the Mondragon manufacturing cooperatives in the Basque Country of Spain, the industrial enterprises of socialist Yugoslavia, the workplace democracy programs in Sweden & Norway, the rural kibbutzim of Israel, & the Pacific Northwest plywood producer cooperatives of the US, as examples. The development of workplace democracy at Coll of the Mainland identities significant achievements in organizing an academic setting, as well as the main problems associated with doing so. These achievements affirm the potential of workplace democracy & reveal the enormous difficulties inherent in trying to develop workplace democracy in a society whose predominant institutions & culture are far from truly democratic & egalitarian. A retrospective on the life & work of Ralph Miliband discusses his contribution to socialist thought & his resistance to skeptics of leftist thought after the collapse of communism. Miliband was particularly noted for his challenge to Francis Fukuyama's assertion of "the end of history" (1992) & the claim that liberal capitalism has proved to be the most viable form of society. Miliband is viewed as a moderate democratic socialist, critical of orthodox Marxism-Leninism & the communist regimes in Eastern Europe & the former USSR. His contributions to the transformation of capitalist societies are noted. D. Karjanen
