The objectif of this paper is to draw attention to the highly dualistic nature of the agricultural sector in Swaziland and its implications for rural development strategy. The paper is composed of four sections. Firstly a brief overview of the economy is presented. Secondly, a structural break-down of the dichotomies existing within the agricultural sector demontrates the vast disparities between the two sub-sectors. Thirdly, drawing from the findings of a recently conducted rural homestead survey, the degree of the homestead's independence of the wage sector is shown. Finally, some of the issues relevant to the design of a more universal approach to rural development are considered
