History, geography, and auxiliary disciplines - De Nederlandse Opstand wordt gewoonlijk beschreven als een aaneenschakeling van politieke polarisering, religieuze radicalisering en militaire mobilisering. Toch vonden tot 1581 telkens opnieuw verzoeningspogingen plaats om deze escalatie te vermijden. Daarbij probeerden zowel edellieden als koninklijke en keizerlijke vertegenwoordigers het conflict op diplomatieke en verzoenende wijze te beslechten. Deze studie gaat over deze vredehandel. Welke verzoeningspogingen werden ondernomen? Waarom werden die telkens opnieuw ondernomen? En vooral, in welke mate konden deze toenaderingspogingen succes boeken? Op basis van archivalische en gedrukte bronnen brengt dit boek de redenen, modaliteiten en mogelijkheden van de vredesonderhandelingen tijdens de beginjaren van de Opstand in kaart. Vanuit de raak- en breekpunten tussen adellijke en Habsburgse verzoeningspogingen werpt dit boek een nieuw licht op de vraag waarom de onderhandelde hereniging met Filips II gedeeltelijk plaatsvond in 1579-1580 en zo een bijkomend motief creëerde voor het Plakkaat van Verlatinge in 1581.

La relation du roi d'Espagne Philippe II avec ses territoires patrimoniaux aux anciens Pays-Bas a fait couler beaucoup d'encre. Selon la « légende noire » largement diffusée depuis le xvi e siècle, le souverain semble tromper et mépriser ses terres héréditaires, mais selon une « légende rose » récente et révisionniste, il paraît apprécier les Pays-Bas, en particulier pour leur art, leur architecture et leur horticulture. Cet article a par conséquent pour ambition d'envisager sous un nouvel angle le gouvernement de Philippe II dans les Dix-Sept Provinces dans son contexte propre et en se fondant sur l'ensemble des apports de l'historiographie des deux dernières décennies. Il envisage successivement la stratégie de Philippe aux Pays-Bas dans le cadre des logiques dynastiques au sein de la famille des Habsbourg et d'une monarchie composite, l'importance de la cour et de la bureaucratie dans le maintien de liens de loyauté entre Bruxelles et Madrid et enfin l'importance des divisions religieuses, d'ampleur européenne, dans les conflits des anciens Pays-Bas. Une attention toute particulière a été accordée à la manière dont le roi a fait usage des réseaux de patronage et de communication pour intégrer ces territoires à sa monarchie polycentrique et à l'échec partiel qu'il a rencontré dans ce domaine à l'issue de son règne.

In most textbooks, the punitive and military mission of the Duke of Alba to the Netherlands in 1567 embodies the Spanish Habsburg response to the Beeldenstorm of the previous year. This representation however, obscures the measures taken in the heat of the moment by Governor General Margaret of Parma, while it also downplays the numerous policy discussions to find the 'right remedy' for iconoclasm. This article argues that repression formed but one part of a broader pacification strategy that also included mediation, reconciliation and reform. The tactic employed by the Spanish Habsburg authorities combined the punishment of prominent leaders with a recognition that most of the participants in the 'troubles' could neither be apprehended nor punished properly, so that a pardon would eventually be necessary. Just such a pardon was issued in July 1570. Even if King and governor-general regarded iconoclasm as outright sacrilege and as divine lèse-majesté committed by heretics, the central authorities framed their response primarily as a legitimate action against worldly lèse-majesté and rebellion, in the short term to silence the religious violence of the iconoclasts, and in the longer term to maintain the initiative in safeguarding order, justice and peace, including in matters religious. De Beeldenstorm en het Spaans-Habsburgse antwoord (1566-1570)De strafmissie van de hertog van Alva in 1567 verschijnt in de meeste handboeken als het Spaans-Habsburgse antwoord op de Beeldenstorm. Deze voorstelling doet weinig recht aan de onmiddellijke maatregelen van de hertogin van Parma voor de komst van Alva, en nog minder aan de voortdurende zoektocht naar de 'juiste remedie' om de onrust te bedaren. De repressie onder Alva vormde slechts een deel van een bredere pacificatiestrategie, die ook verzoeningsgebaren van koningswege inhield. Zo combineerde de Spaans-Habsburgse tactiek strafmaatregelen tegen de voornaamste leiders van de Beeldenstorm met de erkenning dat niet alle aanwezigen bij de 'troebelen' konden worden gearresteerd. Om rechtvaardigheid te doen geschieden, werd daarom in juli 1570 een generaal pardon uitgevaardigd. Daarnaast beargumenteert deze bijdrage dat hoewel Filips II en zijn landvoogden in Brussel de Beeldenstorm als regelrechte blasfemie beschouwden, ze hun optreden hoofdzakelijk rechtvaardigden als een actie tegen rebellie en wereldlijke majesteitsschennis, om zo op de korte termijn de religieuze agenda van de opstandelingen te verzwijgen, en op de lange termijn het monopolie te behouden inzake ordehandhaving en godsdienst. This working paper addresses the limits of Habsburg patronage during the Dutch Revolt, which became clear not only through the rebellion of Prince William of Orange, but also through the opposition of noblemen remaining loyal. It proceeds by a juxtaposition of two loyal noblemen of the lower nobility, Charles Count of Berlaymont (1510-1578) and Philip of Sainte- Aldegonde, Baron of Noircarmes (?-1574), both of whom are portrayed as 'parvenus' and 'collaborators' in traditional (Dutch) historiography. Their decision to remain loyal was however rational, religious and emotional at the same time, rather than the mere selfish behaviour of parvenus. Nevertheless, the both were competing for the same Habsburg patronage resources and therefore chose different patrons and brokers to the Habsburg Court. Berlaymont and Noircarmes still adopted different strategies during the Dutch Revolt which changed opportunities for patronage. Despite their antagonism and their different patrons, Berlaymont and Noircarmes shared quite similar ideas on a desirable approach for the pacification of the Netherlands: a military intervention was under some circumstances necessary, but only if accompanied by reconciliatory measures. In this way, notwithstanding their portrayal as collaborators, they belonged to the 'loyal opposition' and even cooperated to express their disagreement with Habsburg policies. So recipients of patronage in the Netherlands became powerful bargainers, able to air their criticisms towards Habsburg policies.

What do we learn when historical research moves along, across and beyond the boundaries of early modern territorial entities?00Using the concept and method of transregional history, the contributions to this volume seek to answer this question. By focussing on the border regions of the Spanish Habsburg Low Countries, and by exploring interactions in and beyond these borderlands, the chapters shed light on how humans in the past created, handled and surpassed the territorial boundaries they encountered. This approach reveals how early modern borders functioned not only as areas of communication and movement, but also as barriers that hindered or impeded cross-border exchanges.00Looking at the Eastern, Western, Southern and Northern border regions of the Habsburg Netherlands, as well as to the connections between the Netherlands, Spain and their neighbours, the volume connects the boundaries of the Low Countries to a variety of important issues of the time. These contemporary questions included matters of conflict and negotiation, commerce and confession, and loyalty and identity. As such, the variety offered by the transregional methodology applied in this volume, results in a much better understanding of the uniting and dividing aspects of early modern territoriality

Der zweisprachige Sammelband vereinigt zum Teil bahnbrechende Ergebnisse einer interdisziplinären Forschungstagung, deren Beiträge sozial-, wirtschafts-, kultur- und kirchengeschichtliche Aspekte der Frühneuzeit im Karpatenbogen aufgreifen. Basierend auf vielfach erstmals ausgewerteten Quellen bearbeiten die Beiträge aktuelle Fragestellungen und Forschungshorizonte zur Interdependenz von sozialen, ökonomischen, kulturellen und religiösen Phänomenen im Karpatenbogen der Frühen Neuzeit, in dem die Osmanen der international dominante politische Faktor wurden. Transformationsprozesse wurden angestoßen durch Bevölkerungs- und Militärbewegungen, ökonomische, politische und religiös-mentale Umwälzungen, die zwischen opportunistischer Anpassung und rebellierendem Widerstand oszillierten und entsprechende politische Maßnahmen und Gegenreaktionen hervorriefen. Dabei wird die bislang geltende Forschungsmeinung zur Toleranzgeschichte Siebenbürgens in Frage gestellt und völlig neu bewertet.
