The purpose of the article is to identify the points of interaction between the English court culture and the Italian court culture of the first half of the 17th century and to highlight their characteristic features. The novelty of the study lies in understanding the interaction, similarities, and differences between the leading court genres of the Italian and English culture in the first half of the 17th century. The research methodology consists in applying the methods of analysis and synthesis, systematisation of facts, comparison, and generalisation of the research results. The system-historical method made it possible to consider the formation of Italian court culture in the Renaissance. The comparative method helped to reveal the similarities between court musical and theatrical performances in the above-mentioned countries. Conclusions. The attachment of the court culture of England, in general, and the genre of the English court mask, in particular, to the culture of the educated aristocracy of Italy, is verified by the cultural inclusion in the traditions of Italian carnival values and cult Italian dances. During the reign of the Stuart kings, the Italian carnival was well-known in England along with other European court entertainments. Italian dances, costumes, and scenery were used in court musical and theatrical performances in England. Italian choreographers and musicians were welcome guests at the Royal Palace of Whitehall, which contributed to the interaction and interpenetration of continental court culture with the culture of England. However, despite certain parallels between the court musical-theatrical entertainments of England and Italy, their difference was carried out due to the orientation of the performances to a narrow and, accordingly, wider circle of aristocratic participants.

Мета дослідження полягає в аналізі жанрових і функціональних особливостей придворної Маски, її статусу, а також рівня впливу французької культури на Маску часів епохи англійського короля Карла I Стюарта. Методологія дослідження передбачає єдність таких методологічних підходів як культурно-історичний і порівняльний метод аналізу. Системно-історичний метод дозволяє простежити еволюцію придворного жанру Масок епохи короля Карла І. Порівняльний метод застосовується до виявлення характерної специфіки Масок часів правління Карла І. Наукова новизна полягає у спробі осмислення і обґрунтуванні причин трансформації жанру придворної Маски в епоху правління короля Карла І Стюарта. Висновки. Виявлено, що жанр Маски епохи короля Карла І був вбудований в абсолютистська-ієрархічну систему Англії. Позначені функції придворної Маски: затвердження і концентрування влади короля в руках монарха і політично-примирлива функція всередині країни. Визначено, що на Маску часів правління короля Карла І, вплинув французький придворний балет та інструментальна музика. The scientific novelty lies in an attempt to comprehend and justify the reasons for the transformation of the genre of Masque in the era of the reign of King Charles I Stuart. Conclusions. It is revealed that the Masque genre of the era of King Charles 1 was built into the absolutist-hierarchical system of England. The functions of the court Masque are designated: assert the authority and concentration of power in the hands of the monarch, political and reconciliation function inside the country. It is determined that the Masque of the reign of King Charles I was influenced by French court ballet and instrumental music. It is indicated that the Court Masques had lost their international status.

Методологія дослідження полягає в застосуванні методів аналізу й синтезу, систематизації фактів, порівнянні та узагальненні результатів дослідження. Наукова новизна: вперше досліджена проблематика взаємовідносин Візантії і Британії в епоху високого середньовіччя, висунута гіпотеза про колонізацію частини Кримського півострова англійськими варягами протягом декількох століть, розглянуто культурно-політична взаємодія Візантійської імперії та Британії на рубежі XIV-XV століть. Висновки: Візантія була центром християнства і східним форпостом християнського світу, що стимулювало інтерес Британії до Візантії. Завоювання Нормандією Британії в 1066 році запускає кризові та еміграційні процеси, внаслідок чого частина англійців знаходить притулок у Візантії. В цей же період візантійська армія стала все більш залежною від послуг найманців. До кінця XII століття англійці становили основний контингент іноземної найманої армії, особисто відданою імператору. Англійці, які входили до складу особистої гвардії візантійського імператора, скориставшись щедрим подарунком візантійського імператора, заснували колонію під назвою «Нова Англія» на території Кримського півострова, продовжували ідентифікувати себе британцями, не втрачаючи зв'язок з культурою свого народу. Останній візит візантійського імператора в Лондон в 1400 році не приніс значних політичних дивідендів для імперії, але сприяв культурному обміну двох країн. В останні десятиліття існування імперії контакти носили затухаючий характер. ; The purpose of the article to determine the position of Britain in the cultural and political sphere of the life of Byzantium in the era of the late Middle Ages. The research methodology consists of the application of methods of analysis and synthesis, systematization of facts, comparison, and generalization of research results. Scientific novelty. For the first time, the problems of relations between Byzantium and Britain in the era of the late Middle Ages are investigated, and a hypothesis is put forward about the colonization of a part of the Crimean peninsula by English Varangians over several centuries, cultural and political interaction between the Byzantine Empire and Britain at the turn of the XIV-XV centuries is considered. Conclusions. Byzantium was the center of Christianity and the eastern outpost of Christendom, which stimulated British interest in Byzantium. The conquest of Great Britain by Normandy in 1066 triggers crisis and emigration processes, as a result of which some of the British find refuge in Byzantium. During the same period, the Byzantine army became increasingly dependent on the services of mercenaries. By the end of the XIIth century, the British constituted the main contingent of the foreign mercenary army, personally loyal to the emperor. The British, who were part of the personal guard of the Byzantine emperor, and recreated a colony called "New England" on the territory of the Crimean peninsula, continued to identify themselves as British without losing touch with the culture of their people. The last visit of the Byzantine emperor to London in 1400 did not bring significant political dividends for the empire but promoted cultural exchange between the two countries. In the last decades of the empire's existence, these contacts were fading.

Byzantine culture was a fusion of ancient Greek (Hellenistic), Roman, and distinctive Byzantine-Orthodox traditions. The duality of the cultural and spiritual sphere of the Byzantine Empire was expressed in the unity of opposites and the close interaction of the material and spiritual. In Byzantium, Orthodoxy was the cementing foundation. The court culture of Byzantium is a highly centralized hierarchical system.
