The production of economic history, like that in many fields of scholarly endeavor, increased sharply in the past quarter-century, compared to the rate of output in earlier eras. While the "new" economic history, with its emphasis on economic theory and measurement, has attracted considerable attention during the last decade, "traditional" economic history, written along institutional lines, has continued to be significant, both quantitatively (in terms of numbers of books and articles) and qualitatively (as assessed by contributions to our understanding of economic processes.)

Recent scholarship in US history, represented by books published from 1963 to 1966, has contributed to a revision of many elements in the traditional framework of the subject. As the survey of works in pol'al, diplomatic, econ, soc, & intellectual history shows, the results have been presented generally in the form of detailed monographs. Many of the old landmarks of historical generalization have been assailed by the use of traditional methods of the historian's craft, by the device of new techniques such as quantification, & by pushing res into relatively new areas. As yet, though, scholars have not developed any widely accepted synthesis of the history of US society, comparable to those embraced by earlier generations of historians. AA.
