Res on the areal diff'iation of culture is reviewed. Cultural patterns can be treated as spatial expressions of such processes as selective adaptation, circulation, drift, etc. Circulation & COMM as they are related to the complex areal diff'iation of culture are considered. A tentative model is constructed which shows that the nature of the interaction of a culture group with the land will have probable systemic concomitants in group spatial structure. Landscape as spatial expression of culture raises, however, questions of scale. Work on spatial order in soc interaction is brought in & applied to large soc groupings. Processes of spatial ordering give culture regions their internal structure. As relative location changes with alterations in the circulation pattern, so may cultural & soc standing. A geography of contemporary culture is proposed. The concept of culture has never been more elusive in its geographical application than in the world of today. The scope of cultures becomes extended, landscape anchors less effectively, while circulation becomes more intense & culture seems to become increasingly fluid. The challenge to cultural geography is to discover whether, with appropriate changes of scale & technique, it can still use the concept of culture successfully in elucidating man's present & future, as it has his past. Under the cultural turn and transformation the new intellectual discourses started in the 21st century to search the roots, have cross-cultural comparison and to see how the old traditions be used in the contemporary worldviews. This book is the first attempt dealing with roots of Indian geographical thoughts since its beginning in 1920. It emphasises identity of India and Indianness and consciousness among dweller geographers in India, development and status of geography and its recent trend
