This paper focuses on four worker controlled enterprises (Tiakeni Textiles, Twananani, Sasekisa and Tihari) which together with a co-operative service organisation Itsidu constitute a rural co-operative network operating in the vicinity of Elim in South Africa's northern region. The author provides an insight into the long-term impact of community-based co-operatives by revealing the problems encountered, as well as showing the positive aspects of a co-operative approach to production in underdeveloped areas where basic services and job opportunities are minimal.
