Cultural intimacy, both the book and the concept, privileges the nation-state as the site of doing and writing ethnography and understanding sociality in a world customarily designated "globalizing." Not only have we placed our lives and sociality increasingly outside the privacy of our homes and offices; importantly, intimacies are experienced in virtual worlds where privacy proper as well as conventional idioms of ethnographic practice are no longer operational. This paper deploys public intimacy as the opposite, not as a kind, of cultural intimacy in a way to explore and elucidate new formations of intimacy in a world saturated with globalizing economies of circulation, imitation, and sociability.

An attempt to remap the topography of migrant youth culture in Berlin focuses on the ability of the cultural projects of Turkish migrant youths to transform an alien urban environment into an essential part of their new transnational identities. Turkish youth are said to occupy a place that is neither here nor there. The "in-betweenness" of migrant youth in the neighborhood of Kreuzberg, the city of Berlin, & Europe is described, along with the institutional settings & public spaces in which youth culture is produced & performed. Special attention is given to the cultural impact of NaunynRitze, a youth center in Kreuzberg that hosted a festival called Street '94 in March 1994. NaunynRitze, a self-proclaimed center for cosmopolitan hip & a showcase for multicultural youth performances, receives financial assistance from state & city sources. The link between the innovative style of Berlin's hip-hop performers & the global hip-hop scene is pointed out. It is concluded that these youth cultural projects replace old boundaries, define new places, & contribute to the remaking of Europe. J. Lindroth

2001 was the 40th Anniversary of Turkish Migration to Germany, marking four decades after the first Turkish workers began joining the ranks of Italian, Spaniard, and other migrant laborers coming north in search of employment from countries around the Mediterranean. The anniversary was celebrated with meetings, panel discussions, concerts, radio shows, and almost endless articles and editorials in newspapers. The highlight of the year, one might say, was "Turkish Day," bringing Turkish immigrants from all over Germany to Berlin for a parade.

In contrast to most other countries, both Germany and Israel have descent-based concepts of nationhood and have granted members of their nation (ethnic Germans and Jews) who wish to immigrate automatic access to their respective citizenship privileges. Therefore these two countries lend themselves well to comparative analysis of the integration process of immigrant groups, who are formally part of the collective "self" but increasingly transformed into "others." The book examines the integration of these 'privileged' immigrants in relation to the experiences of other minority groups (e.g. labor migrants, Palestinians). This volume offers rich empirical and theoretical material involving historical developments, demographic changes, sociological problems, anthropological insights, and political implications. Focusing on the three dimensions of citizenship: sovereignty and control, the allocation of social and political rights, and questions of national self-understanding, the essays bring to light the elements that are distinctive for either society but also point to similarities that owe as much to nation-specific characteristics as to evolving patterns of global migration
