'Häufig wird die mangelnde Integration von Jugendlichen in Vereinen und Verbänden beklagt und mit Sorgen um das politische Interesse und die politische Beteiligung von Jugendlichen verbunden. In Anbetracht der Sorge über den Rückgang des Sozialkapitals und der deshalb befürchteten Konsequenzen für die politische Partizipation untersucht dieser Artikel anhand der Daten des European Value Survey (1999/ 2000), inwiefern westeuropäische Jugendliche im Alter zwischen 18 und 25 Jahren Sozialvermögen im Sinne von Mitgliedschaften in formellen Organisationen und informellen Netzwerken haben, ob Jugendliche tatsächlich politikverdrossen sind, und ob bzw. wie dies mit einem möglicherweise fehlenden Sozialvermögen in Zusammenhang steht.' Despite growing evidence of many environmental and other problems being caused by industrialized meat production, the issue of meat consumption is still generally seen as a private affair that has nothing to do with politics or education. This article problematizes meat consumption and discusses transformative learning theory in the light of the authors experiences with denialism in critical meat education. It reveals the potential of a cross-fertilization through which transformative learning theory gains complexity and critical meat education benefits from a more coherent theoretical and practical frame. ; (VLID)5205872 ; Version of record

This book discusses opportunities and limitations to democratic participation in institutions and organizations across the life course. It demonstrates that democratic participation is not something that is learned once and for all and applied in formal political settings, but something that is lived every day throughout life in various contexts. Institutions and organizations frame human lives and strongly determine the ability to participate and co-determine their communities. They are places for learning, deliberation and the development of the common good. The book conceptually and empirically analyses the potential of democratic participation within various institutions. The contributions range from early childhood institutions, schools, youth programs, workplaces, and vocational education to cultural organizations and nursing homes for the elderly. The book thereby provides a cross-sectional and interdisciplinary knowledge base to inspire future research and practical efforts to promote democratic participation within and across institutions around the world.

Impatience with politics in Germany, disenchantment with political commitment and individualization are labels frequently attached to the political involvement of young people. Empirical analyses, however, show a rather more complex picture. A basic willingness to become politically involved and to express political opinions is apparent. Indeed, many young people make use of numerous and varied opportunities to express themselves politically, although usually no more than occasionally. Not surprisingly, participation in traditional associations has fallen in some cases. On the other hand, affinity and commitment to 'New Social Movements'(NSMs) remain fairly consistent. Participation patterns among young people differ according to gender, education level and place of origin: federal states of former West Germany (the 'old' states) or the former German Democratic Republic (the 'new' states). One focus of the article is on the differences between West and East Germany. The results are then discussed within a European context.

'Der Artikel untersucht die Ressourcen und Erfahrungen, die es jungen Menschen ermöglichen eine Identifikation mit Europa zu entwickeln. Berücksichtigt werden Reiseerfahrung, Migrationserfahrung und die Kenntnis europäischer Fremdsprachen als Faktoren von 'Kontakt mit Europa' sowie die alltägliche face-to-face Diskussion politischer und sozialer Themen und das Ausmaß des im Schulunterricht vermittelten Wissens über die EU als Aspekte der kognitiven Mobilisierung in Bezug auf Europa. Die empirische Analyse zeigt, dass 'Kontakt mit Europa' und kognitive Mobilisierung in Bezug auf Europa wichtige Voraussetzungen für eine Identifikation mit Europa darstellen. Daher kann die Identifikation mit Europa nicht getrennt von den Ressourcen behandelt werden, die eine solche Identifikation erst möglich machen. Da diese Ressourcen ungleich verteilt sind, weist der Artikel auf den Stellenwert hin, den Konzepte sozialer Ungleichheit für die Untersuchung der Identifikation mit Europa haben. Die Datengrundlage bilden standardisierte Interviews mit einer repräsentativen Stichprobe der 18-24 Jährigen in 10 europäischen Regionen: Bilbao, Madrid, Edinburgh, Manchester, Chemnitz, Bielefeld, Prag, Bratislava, Wien und Vorarlberg (N=3890), die im Zuge des von der Europäischen Kommission im fünften Rahmenprogramm finanzierten multi-nationale Forschungsprojekt 'Orientation of young men and women to citizenship and European identity' durchgeführt wurden.' 'Die Europäische Union regelt in immer stärkerem Maß das Leben der Europäischen BürgerInnen, nicht nur im ökonomischen sondern im politischen und sozialen Bereich. Dennoch sind Wissen über und Interesse an diesen Entwicklungen gering. In diesem Zusammenhang ist die Einstellung junger Menschen als zukünftige WählerInnen und BürgerInnen besonders wichtig. Basierend auf einer Studie unter insgesamt 3890 18-24 Jährigen in 10 europäischen Regionen werden Faktoren analysiert, die das Interesse an Europäischer Integration und die Absicht sich an Wahlen zum Europäischen Parlament zu beteiligen, fördern. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Aspekte der 'Aktivierung' wie 'political efficacy' (wahrgenommene politische Wirksamkeit), Diskussionen politischer und sozialer Themen und das persönliche Interesse an einer Reihe von politischen und sozialen Fragen, beide Einstellungen beeinflussen. Zusätzlich stellte sich die emotionale Verbundenheit mit Europa als weiterer wichtiger Faktor heraus. Für die 'Aktivierung' spielt neben soziodemographischen Variablen 'citizenship education' (politische Bildung) eine wichtige Rolle. Art und Ausmaß von 'citizenship education' variieren beträchtlich zwischen den untersuchten Ländern. Die Daten unterstreichen somit die Bedeutung von 'citizenship education' im Allgemeinen und einer europäischen Ausrichtung im Speziellen.' (Autorenreferat)
