In developing the measures of agriculture policy and purposeful usage of EU funds, also for financial organisations, farmers, advisors and scientists it is important to predict farm bankruptcy. This makes it possible to formulate the scientific problem: what is the likelihood of bankruptcy of different kinds of family farms? The aim of the investigation is to present the likelihood of the Lithuanian family farms bankruptcy based on the economic size and type of farming by analysing financial indicators of farms. Farm-level panel data for the year 2014–2016 from Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) was used. The estimated distribution of farm groups based on farm economic size demonstrated that about 40–60% of small farms were in the low likelihood of bankruptcy area. The share of cereals, oilseeds and protein crop farms in the high likelihood of bankruptcy area fluctuated from 13% till 30% during the year 2014–2016. The farm distribution by economic size and type of farming showed that more than 40% of small dairy farms had the high likelihood of bankruptcy in the year 2015–2016, as well as 30% of medium and large cereals, oilseeds and protein crops farms in 2016. ; Formuojant žemės ūkio politikos priemones ir siekiant tikslingai panaudoti Europos Sąjungos paramos lėšas, svarbu numatyti galimą ūkio bankrotą. Tyrime analizuoti Ūkių apskaitos duomenų tinklo (ŪADT) ūkio lygio 2014–2016 m. tų pačių ūkių duomenys. Ūkių grupių pasiskirstymas pagal ūkių ekonominį dydį parodė, kad 40–60 proc. mažų ūkių bankroto tikimybė yra nedidelė. Javų, rapsų, ankštinių augalų grūdams ūkių grupėje bankroto tikimybė buvo nuo 13 iki 30 proc. ūkių, priklausomai nuo nagrinėjamų metų. Analizė pagal ūkių ekonominį dydį ir ūkininkavimo tipą parodė, kad aukšta bankroto tikimybė grėsė daugiau kaip 40 proc. mažų pieno ūkių 2015–2016 m. ir daugiau kaip 30 proc. vidutinių ir didelių javų, rapsų, ankštinių augalų grūdams ūkių 2016 m.

The aim of the paper is to investigate the effects of agricultural subsidies on income variability of Lithuanian dairy farms. In addition, the observed heterogeneity in income risks across farms and time is explained in terms of farm characteristics. Today sustainable development strategies are under reconstruction by global governance bodies together with stakeholders from around the world, concerning the main issue of durable future. Agriculture as main provider of public goods, recently had experienced pressure from public society and entered the debates for an essential review of the underlying support principles, based on multifunctionality, which hardly meet the goals of sustainable development. Recently some evidence appeared that the gap between multifunctionality and sustainability might be closed with help of corporate social responsibility (CSR). The paper aims to disclose the challenges and incentives which accelerated the origination of CSR concept and related discussions in an agrarian discourse through the provision of public goods. Systemic analysis and synthesis of theoretical insights of foreign and local scientific literature and the methods of induction and deduction were applied to investigate the theoretical aspect and characteristics of CSR and public goods in agrarian discourse. Theoretical research results propose that the concept of CSR does provide a basis for further analysis and discussion concerning the role of agriculture as a subject of government support from a broader systems perspective, which means a shift in paradigms, emphasized by movement from the sectoral policy and agricultural support to a more inclusive place-based development.

Farmers operate in a changing market, policy and social environment so questions arise as to how they experience these changes and react in their business orientation. This topic was examined in the period 2011 to 2016 in a strongly fluctuating product market and food policy environment, e.g., abolition of milk quotas in Europe. The study was based on unique panel data for 290 dairy farms in Poland, Slovenia, Lithuania and The Netherlands, questioned up to three times in 2011, 2013 and 2016. The conceptual framework was composed of Farmer goals, Resources, Opportunities and Threats (O&T), and Future expectations (performance) as continuous variables, and countries and strategy farmer groups as categorical variables. Data were analysed applying PCA, ANOVA, cluster and regression analyses. Dairy farmers seemed not to be motivated or educated to take strategic decisions that made the best use of their resources and to take opportunities and mitigate threats to achieve their personal goals. Farmer perceptions were strongly affected by country of origin, local environment and milk price, and less by the strategy group. The market situation is one of the dominant factors affecting the mind-set of farmers in Europe. Future expectations were evaluated highest in 2013 (period with 'high' prices), lowest in 2016 (price crisis) and intermediate in 2011 (moderate price period). The large dependence of farmers on the price of their product could be a sensitive issue for politicians, but also food chain members and farmers' syndicates. They may anticipate a fluctuating attitude of farmers with respect to organisational and institutional plans and implemented measures, depending on the market situation and related policy context.

Accession of both countries to the structures of the European Union has radically changed the functioning of the entire dairy sector which faced changes and the necessity to comply with the new free market circumstances. The first aim of this article is to present the overview of the dairy industry in Poland and in Lithuania after the accession to the EU. The second aim is to focus on the economic situation of milk producers. The summary clearly shows the immense progress in complying with the EU requirements, although the gap between these two markets and the biggest EU milk producers is still significant. The economic results of analysed dairy farms in Poland and in Lithuania confirmed the improved performance of productivity since 2004. Relatively small (about 50%) share of subsidies in farm net income makes milk production less dependent on such type of support.
