The study of a broad range of social movements has indicated the continued reoccurrence of a "life-cycle" phenomenon. The movement frequently evolves out of a feeling of frustration and discontent, grows rapidly to a point of institutionalization when its impact on the larger society is greatest, and then enters a period of decline. A review of the environmental social movement indicates that it may be following a similar path. The period of rapid growth and broad popular support has already passed. Nevertheless, it is argued that the movement's impact, and hence its legacy, is already a significant one. Changes in the areas of cultural values, individual life-styles, and legal and legislative actions are reviewed to demonstrate this point. It is also projected that significant changes will continue to occur, though with perhaps less fanfare than was true in the past.

Abstract As predicted by the classic sociological theories of Durkheim, Tonnies, and others, early sociological researchers found extensive differences between urban and rural residents in the United States. In recent decades, many of these differences have appeared to wane, or in some cases, totally disappear. Based on these classic theories, we maintain that many of the urban/rural differences found in the past were actually farm/nonfarm differences. Further, we argue that many of these differences continue to exist in rural America, but they have been suppressed by major demographic transitions. Utilizing Current Population Survey data on family structure, we found that there were few significant differences between urban and rural nonfarm residents, but both varied extensively from various segments of the farm population.

Abstract Growing concern with the effect of negative public attitudes toward the police on police‐community polarization and morale and effectiveness has led to numerous efforts to improve the image of the policeman and to facilitate more positive relationships with the community. It is proposed that the eflectiveness of such programs is hindered by their failure to consider that public attitudes toward the police do not exist in isolation, but are a part of a broader complex of attitudes toward the system of legal justice and its various representatives. Data from four different samples of residents of a western state provide some tentative support for this hypothesis. Implications of the data for programs designed to improve police‐community relationships are discussed.

In a relatively short period of time, Romanian political science has made considerable progress, moving from virtual obscurity to unchallenged local prominence. This article examines the efforts to date to institutionalize political science as a separate teaching and research discipline by presenting recently established political science university-level programs, the major groups of authors carrying out research on political phenomena and the recurrent themes emerging from relevant literature. Though the present article is concerned mainly with current developments, occasional references to the political science's position during the communist period are also made.
