Conflicting findings regarding gender patterns in political belief & behavior are reconciled through an examination of east Tex women & their daughters. Data were obtained from a self-administered survey of all 244 members of a high school sophomore class, plus in-depth interviews with 12 white & 12 black randomly selected class members & their parents. The political participation of women is limited by SE constraints, but these women possess appropriate skills & attitudes for political participation when perceived consequences are sufficiently important to them. 4 Tables.
