Review of the books "Elections and democracy in Central America", edited by John A. Booth and Mitchell A. Seligson, and "Repression and resistance: the struggle for democracy in Central America", by Edelberto Torres-Rivas. Stark notes that the first book seeks to isolate one significant factor - the electoral process - in order to assess its impact on democratization in Central America. The second rejects the possibility of such a divide-and-conquer approach and pursues multiple dialectical relationships between economics, classes and politics as they have shifted and recombined over the last 50 years
