This article focuses on John Gillingham's European Integration 1950-2003, Superstate or New Market Economy. While the book reads as an exciting journalistic report, unfortunately it often focuses on judgments of European failures without including the associated facts, rejecting analysis & interpretation. Neither of the options proposed by Gillingham is realistic, & a third alternative is not considered. Walter Hallstein (1974), on the other hand, offered a realistic alternative with a federal type system with common goals, organs, communities, & associations. Gillingham's book is primarily useful in identifying individual developments, influence, & the many failures & problems in Europe. L. Kehl
