Populist movements centre around a strong political leader and focus on the distinction between 'the people' and 'the elite'. As soon as populists gain government power, they are thus faced with an ideological dilemma: Suddenly, they themselves are the political elite. Continuing in this line of thought, the article aims to understand whether a change in political power affects how populists and their supporters engage in dialogue online. Assuming that populist practices differ depending on the degree to which the politician in question still adheres to the political establishment, the analysis compares tweets by Donald Trump and his supporters with tweets by Boris Johnson and his followers based on 727 tweets posted in two stratified constructed weeks before and after the respective politician took office. By focusing on dialogue practices of populists as well as their supporters in terms of converging or diverging pragma-rhetoric strategies, the article extends existing research on populism by adding the voice of those who conceptualize themselves as embodiment of 'the people' that populism evokes. The results show how person deixis and ethotic arguments in online dialogues not only establish a rapport between populist leaders and their followers, but also serve to form collectives that are intransigently opposed to each other. ; Version of record

AbstractHeckles are an illegitimate, yet common way of commenting directly and immediately on what is being said at the lectern. However, (non-)verbal interjections can also be used to disconcert the speaker, thus scoring points within the parliamentary arena. In these cases, female delegates are often confronted with discriminatory remarks and comments that border on sexism and even misogyny. Based on the extensive literature on gender and discourse, the following paper will focus on gender-related heckles and analyse argumentative structures and topoi that are grounded in sexist stereotypes and conservative role-models. Presuming that these incidents are not isolated instances, the paper will compare and contrast several examples from around the world that have caught public attention.

Der Beitrag geht der kommunikativen Konstruktion rechter bzw. extrem rechter politischer Identität im Netz nach. Basis der Untersuchung bilden LeserInnen-Postings, die im Anschluss an den freiheitlichen "Exil-Jude"-Sager bei dr Voralberger Landtagswahl 2009 auf krone.de veröffentlicht wurden, In einem ersten Schritt wird dabei auf lokaler Ebene nach spezifischen Kategorisierungsprozessen gesucht, die dem Selbst, dem Gegenüber und anderen eine bestimmte Identität zuweisen. In einem zweiten Schritt werden typische Argumentationsschemata herausgearbeitet, in denen rechte bzw. extrem recht Denkmuster zum Ausdruck kommen.

"This book addresses an under-researched area within populism studies: the discourse of supporters of populist parties. Taking the 2019 European elections as their case study, the authors analyse how supporters in eleven different countries construct identities and voting motivations on social media. The individual chapters comprise a range of methods to investigate data from different social media platforms, defining populism as a political strategy and/or practice, realised in discourse, that is based on a dichotomy between "the people", who are unified by their will, and an out-group whose actions are not in the interest of the people, with a leader safeguarding the interests of the people against the out-group. The book identifies what motivates people to vote for populist parties, what role national identities and values play in those motivations, and how the social media postings of populist parties are recontextualised in supporters' comments to serve as a voting motivation"--
