Due to Europe's ever-increasing dependency on Russia for energy, the Arctic regions have a strategic importance that no one could have predicted only two or three years ago. Norway has an absolutely critical role to play in this new state of affairs, according to minister of foreign affairs Jonas Gahr Store in this interview with Laure Mandeville. Norway -- like neighboring Russia, a gas & oil producer whose territory stretches into the Arctic zone -- was one of the first countries to understand the high stakes in this region & to focus the attention of the EU on the economic & environmental challenges it poses. Norway is the world's third-largest exporter of gas & oil, & yet unlike most other major energy producers it has fashioned an economic model that assures the country's prosperity, & has never used energy as a diplomatic weapon against its partners. In short, Norway is an excellent case study. Adapted from the source document.
