The Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania, one of the largest protected wildlands in the world, is a strict conservation area with limited and exclusive access for hunting and wildlife viewing tourism. Throughout their history, the people who have lived in the area now covered by Selous Game Reserve and its surrounding lands have had an intimate knowledge of their own wildlife. This knowledge is reflected in the local languages where many animals and most plants are named. This list of some vernacular names of wild animals in the local languages Kingindo, Kimatumbi and Kipogoro is published because the management of wildlife in and around Selous Game Reserve is increasingly calling upon the cooperation and participation of the local people.
