A survey of the sociopolitical forces behind the recent conflict between Serbs, Croats, & Muslim Bosnians in the former Yugoslavia leads to the conclusion that the centuries-old ethnic tensions were actually exacerbated by state-enforced multiculturalism under the Titoist regime & are today further exacerbated by the ongoing Marxist mind-set that survives as a legacy from communism among many political actors in the now independent former Yugoslavian territories. Since the fall of the communist East, liberal democracy has remained the sole form of political system. The author, in the vein of Carl Schmitt, raises some serious doubts about the ability of that system to stand up to the challenges posed by the 21st century. That dubiety stems primarily from the dichotomy between liberalism & democracy & the fact that technology, though apolitical according to the liberal canon, has long been politicized. An examination of the historical dynamics of liberalism & its impact on contemporary Western politics. It is argued that liberalism does not decrease the chances of nondemocratic regimes coming to power; in fact, in many cases liberalism seems to be stimulating their attraction for the rootless masses. However, when economic growth cannot be sustained, & when constantly new material desires cannot be fulfilled for all, the logical transition may be to communism. Moreover, by incessantly atomizing the body politics, & by gradually erasing national & historical consciousness, liberalism may also spur the rise of right-wing regimes. Modified AA
"Along with his other published works, Tomislav Sunic is steadily turning his attention to a wide variety of topics affecting Europe's cultural and political heritage, including such sacred and less sacred cows, as liberalism, the artistic legacy of the Third Reich, the religion of multiculturalism, the pathology of Communism, the works of Spengler and Schmitt, as well as the history of a failed multicultural entity known as Yugoslavia. Postmortem Report invites us to reassess the European past, from Antiquity to Modernity, through the lenses of a cultural pessimist. This collection of essays and translations will appeal to anyone who wishes for an honest, surgical approach to these topics, freed from the liberal academic agenda. It is a vital addition to Sunic's prose."--Page 4 of cover
