Among the most important disputes in the social sciences is that between Karl Popper & Theodor W. Adorno, or more generically, between critical rationalism & critical theory. At a 1961 congress of German sociologists in Tubingen, Popper formulated twenty-seven theses about the logic of the social sciences. Adorno ignored the theses, avoiding discussion. Other social scientists -- including Ralf Dahrendorf, Jurgen Habermas, & Hans Albert -- discussed both Popper's paper & the dispute between him & Adorno, some describing the situation as a trap. Their different points of view & the role of the Frankfurt school are discussed. 1 Table. Modified AA
