The historical background of the various oriental Jewish communities in Israel is examined. Zionism was overwhelmingly European as a movement, but after the founding of Israel, Jews in Muslim countries experienced pressures that led to mass emigration to Israel. The oriental Jews were treated in this period as a source of cheap labor in agriculture, construction, & industry. Recruitment of civil servants from oriental Jews was extremely low. Israeli society remains ethnically segregated, a pattern reflected in education & employment & in ideological portrayals of oriental Jews as backward. Oriental protest at this situation took the form of a vote for the Likud -- a coalition of parties representing primarily Mc Ashkenazic businessmen -- largely because oriental Jewish organizations are difficult to form & politically ineffective, while the Likud offers a means of opposing the dominant Labor party. This vote does not represent a basic cultural commitment but a short-term strategy. W. H. Stoddard.
