Cultural Borderland in sociological and political perspective : (the case of Upper Silesia)
"The text that I submit contains sociological reflection upon the multidimensional concept of borderline region. My paper is also another attempt at reinterpretation of results of empirical studies carried out in Upper Silesia in the years 1985—1996, the region being a typical, in my opinion, case of cultural borderline (Szczepański, 1991; Błasiak, Nawrocki, Szczepański, 1994; Szczepański, ed., 1993; Szczepański, ed., 1993, a; Szczepański, ed., 1994; Szczepański, ed., 1994, a; Szczepański, ed., 1995; Szczepański, ed., 1996). Their summarizing recapitulation needs to be preceded by at least a preliminary analysis of key words and notions, which constitute the internal logic of the paper and its organization. Those notions constitute a triad, based on similarity or closeness of meanings (borderland — geographic borderland — cultural borderland)." (fragm.)

National minority, ethnic minority, ethnic majority : introduction
The book, which I have the pleasure to introduce to the readers, is one of the first collections of sociological studies which take comprehensively — though by no means in an exhaustive way — the problems of national and ethnic minorities in Poland, as well as their relations with the national and ethnic majority of the population of the country in question. The issues dealt with in this book are of great importance both in their cognitive and practical aspect. In the history of Poland, its most recent chapter included, multinationality and — connected with it to some extent — multi-religion never were matters of marginal significance, however marginalized they were from time to time for political reasons. According to the data obtained in the 1931 census: "Poles constituted 68.9% of the society, the Ukrainians made 13.9%, Jews 8.6%, Belarussians 3.1%, Germans 2.3%, while other nationalities the remaining 3.2% of the population of Poland" (Lodziriski, 1995). Posługa uniwersytetu. Akademia Platońska i współczesny uniwersytet
In: Roczniki nauk społecznych: Annales des sciences sociales = Annals of social sciences, Band 51, Heft 1, S. 23-39
W dziejach uniwersytetu wskazać można przełomowe wydarzenia i słowa, jak te prof. Kazimierza Twardowskiego o dostojeństwie i powinnościach uczelni.
In: Polen-Analysen, Heft 304, S. 2-5
ISSN: 1863-9712

Wielokulturowość: idea, teoria i polityka

The turn of the millennium brought an increased interest in issues of multiculturalism, which became a focal point for debates about culture, especially in liberal democracies. The question is particularly important in that most people today live in heterocultural societies. The authors thus do not approach multiculturalism as the simple coexistence in society of members of various ethnic groups but rather as a theoretical basis for the scholarly analysis of the state and of society, which implement policies in regard to internal cultural (ethnic) diversity. Multiculturalism thus defines a social space in which people who adhere to different axiological, normative, religious or moral systems, and who are aware of these differences, live together. At the same time, state policy aims to include all of them in a social order which is being modified under the influence of cultural diversity. Multiculturalism can be presented on the one hand as an idea that is not apprehended directly but is known through concepts, and on the other hand, as an entity identified by the senses. The authors illustrate the transition from an idea to a state policy in regard to a multitude of ethnic cultures by reference to Australia and the Federal Republic of Germany.
