Historians have sought some basis for a concept of European identity & of the unity of Europe. The crucial event for this development, in the seventeenth century, was the recognition by European thinkers that the classical world had been superceded as a model. Among other elements in this development was the emergence of the idea of 'idea,' as embodied in the works of such philosophers as J. Locke & R. Descartes. W. H. Stoddard.
