Although chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have been of major importance in developed countries for several decades, currently it is becoming recognized as a major public health threats in the developing world too.The increasing NCDs burden is compounded by failure in provision of clear and up-to-date evidence on the burden for key decision makers. The present study is designed to collect retrospective secondary data from selected Government and Private Hospitals in Addis Ababa that offer services to out-patients of NCDs through special referral clinics. The Objective of this research is to depict the patterns and trends of common NCDs in Government and Private Hospitals in Adds Ababa, and provide decision makers with information on the burden of NCDs at health facility level.In order to collect retrospective data, four Governments and five Private owned Hospitals in Addis Ababa that offer referral clinic for NCD were selected. Data of NCD out-patients from 2007 to 2011 were considered for present study. Records of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, cancer, chronic kidney diseases and chronic pulmonary obstructive diseases including asthma were collected. The data were collected from Hospital registration and patient records anonymously by respective Hospital staff members assigned in the referral clinics.Records of 46,565 patients were collected and more than 60% data were obtained from TikurAnbessa Specialized Teaching Hospital and International cardiac center. Majority of the clients (77 %) were from urban areas while 23% from rural areas. With regard to gender, 56% of the patients are females and 44% males. As age increases the proportion of patients with NCDs increased and there was a decline after 54 years. Among the patients who were attending outpatient clinics, the vast majority about 40% were patients were with cardiovascular diseases while diabetes and cancer each independently accounts 20% of the proportion. Patients with chronic pulmonary obstructive diseases including asthma, and chronic kidney diseases were 6% and 5%, respectively. Information regarding the status of patients while making follow-up was also collected. It resulted in about 56% of all NCDs out-patients were actively following their health condition by making frequent visit to their respective out-patient referral clinics, about 2% were deceased and 1% referred to other hospitals, about 41.2% of all NCDs patients were found to be drop-out for unknown reasons. This research reveals that NCDs are becoming public health problems in Addis Ababa. Therefore, there is a need for population-based representative survey to quantify the burden with risk factors for policy formulation and interventions against this emerging epidemic. Moreover, further study is recommended to investigate the reasons of patients why they discontinue care & treatment offered at facility level.

OBJECTIVES: Despite much nutrition research conducted in Ethiopia, none has described existing opportunities for synergy or possible missed opportunities to use research to inform policy and program decisions to foster accelerated progress. The study aimed to describe prevailing processes on evidence use in formulating nutrition policy and program decisions and identify potential barriers and opportunities for evidence-based decision-making for nutrition for Ethiopia's context. METHODS: In 2017, 29 purposively selected key informants (KIs) were interviewed. They were identified using a consultative stakeholder mapping workshop and represented National Nutrition Program coordinators, key actors in government sectors, program coordinators from selected local and international NGOs, local and international universities and research institutes involved in nutrition research and key actors in policy decision-making. A framework analysis including identifying themes, coding, indexing, charting, mapping and interpretation was used. A validation workshop discussed findings and added perspectives to interpretation. RESULTS: The KIs perceived that demand for evidence from the Ethiopian government had been increasing over time. Majority referred to poor research quality as a barrier for using research in decision-making processes. Other challenges identified included limited cross-linkage, coordination gaps between researchers and decision makers, and inadequate translation of research evidence into meaningful information for policy makers. Availability of different forums, research dissemination conferences and suitable institutional structures that enable research and evidence dissemination were considered to be opportunities that should be leveraged to inform policy making. CONCLUSIONS: The quality of research, and of collaborative engagement between those who produce evidence and decision makers who formulate policies need to be strengthened. Background Countdown to 2015 (Countdown) supported countries to produce case studies that examine how and why progress was made toward the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 4 and 5. Analysing how health-financing data explains improvements in RMNCH outcomes was one of the components to the case studies. Methods This paper presents a descriptive analysis on health financing from six Countdown case studies (Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Malawi, Pakistan, Peru, and Tanzania), supplemented by additional data from global databases and country reports on macroeconomic, health financing, demographic, and RMNCH outcome data as needed. It also examines the effect of other contextual factors presented in the case studies to help interpret health-financing data. Results Dramatic increases in health funding occurred since 2000, where the MDG agenda encouraged countries and donors to invest more resources on health. Most low-income countries relied on external support to increase health spending, with an average 20–64 % of total health spending from 2000 onwards. Middle-income countries relied more on government and household spending. RMNCH funding also increased since 2000, with an average increase of 119 % (2005–2010) for RMNH expenditures (2005–2010) and 165 % for CH expenditures (2005–2011). Progress was made, especially achieving MDG 4, even with low per capita spending; ranging from US$16 to US$44 per child under 5 years among low-income countries. Improvements in distal factors were noted during the time frame of the analysis, including rapid economic growth in Ethiopia, Peru, and Tanzania and improvements in female literacy as documented in Malawi, which are also likely to have contributed to MDG progress and achievements. Conclusions Increases in health and RMNCH funding accompanied improvements in outcomes, though low-income countries are still very reliant on external financing, and out-of-pocket comprising a growing share of funds in middle-income settings. Enhancements in tracking RMNCH expenditures across countries are still needed to better understand whether domestic and global health financing initiatives lead to improved outcomes as RMNCH continues to be a priority under the Sustainable Development Goals.
