In the twenty-first century, East Asia has been increasingly marked both by tensions at a government level and a chauvinistic mood among the polity. While China's rise is in one respect the proximate driver of these changes in tone, it draws on a range of unresolved grievances among the respective historical narratives of Mainland China, Taiwan, Japan and the Koreas. These conflicting views of the region's past are a crucial barrier to its cohesive and stable future. This book brings together East Asian scholars from a range of academic disciplines, including China historians, political historians and political scientists to illuminate the interconnectedness of East Asia and discuss how a shared historical narrative might be constructed. Their contributions are organised into 3 parts focusing respectively on historical narratives of China, historical narratives of East Asia, and reconciling historical narratives. The book will appeal to researcher interested in the historical narratives of international relations in East Asia.

Der Beitrag betrachtet vor dem Hintergrund einer veränderten Weltordnung die Rolle und den Einfluss der internationalen Institutionen. Dabei gliedern sich die Ausführungen in folgende Punkte: (1) den Wiederaufstieg Deutschlands und Japans nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, (2) den Aufstieg Ostasiens, insbesondere durch China und Indien, und die erschwerte Arbeit internationaler Organisationen, (3) den Aufbau einer regionalen institutionellen Architektur in Ostasien sowie (4) die Schaffung eines regelbasierten regionalen Wirtschaftssystems. Die Struktur der internationalen Institutionen ist nach Ansicht des Autors so veraltet, dass sie rapide an Legitimität verlieren und ihre Ordnungsfunktionen nicht mehr wahrnehmen können. Werden sie jetzt nicht umfassend reformiert, sinken auch die Chancen, den überwältigenden Aufstieg der neuen asiatischen Mächte in geordnete, kooperative, friedliche Bahnen zu lenken. (ICG2)

Abstract This paper presents an endogenous product cycle overlapping generations model, where the supply of skilled labour is endogenously determined. This is used to examine how production shifts through imitation by developing countries affect the domestic wage differential and supply of skilled labour in developed countries. In the model, production shifts increase the demand for researchers in developed countries and cause higher relative wages for skilled labour: this leads to more individuals acquiring the skills. As a consequence, the model helps to explain the simultaneous increase in the domestic wage gap and in the supply of skilled labour observed in developed countries.
