Asia and the United States after 9/11: Primacy and Partnership in the Pacific
In: The Fletcher forum of world affairs, Band 28, Heft 1, S. 113-132
ISSN: 1046-1868
Considers post-9/11 (2001) US-Asian relations. Discussion opens with a look at the post-9/11 US policies driving the US agenda, which while supported domestically, has been met with skepticism internationally. Asian positions & policies in response to the US post-9/11 agenda & its intervention in Iraq are addressed, suggesting that US-Asian relations have largely benefited despite the controversial nature of that agenda. A typology of Asian responses from close alignment to difference is provided. The wider context of these events & policies is scrutinized to shed light on emerging trends in US-Asian relations. Not as given to multilateralism as Europe, Asia has privileged realism & bilateralism vis-a-vis the US. It is asserted that such a development has moved the Asia-Pacific away from ideas of parity, equity, & community. Burgeoning regionalism in East Asia & its connection to Asia-Pacific institutions & US influence is touched on in conclusion. J. Zendejas

The ASEAN Regional Forum: Preparing for preventive diplomacy
In: Contemporary Southeast Asia, Band 19, Heft 3, S. 252-268
ISSN: 0129-797X
In 1997, the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) agreed to move towards preventive diplomacy. The agreement follows from the recognition of the ARF, quite early on, that, "preventive diplomacy would be a natural follow-up to confidence-building measures." The authors consider how the ARF should be prepared to exercise preventive diplomacy in order to maintain peace in the region, and the implications of such preparations for the evolution of the ARF as an institution.
