In higher education institutions (HEI), whose primary functions are oriented to the activities of learning, teaching and research workspace kitchens are disregarded spaces. Yet kitchens do vital but unnoticed work in everyday institutional life. This article develops a post-human, post-disciplinary and post-methodological analytical framing to give kitchens, and the confederation of connections they produce, the attention they deserve. The article draws on a post-qualitative data bricolage of mobile phone snaps, assemblage ethnography, vox pop and memory story to analyze the posthuman matterings within and of HEI kitchens. Theoretically, the article is grounded in a post-disciplinary approach which draws conceptual resources from sociology, human geography, anthropology, material culture and education. It explores the HE workspace kitchen as a productive site for the enactment of a multitude of material, affective and micro-political institutional practices. The article argues that kitchens matter as important liminal spaces for the materialization of institutional rules, values, norms, belonging and community.

This article ponders two questions: 1. What does 'post-qualitative' mean to you? 2. Why do you think the 'post-qualitative' movement is important to the field of qualitative inquiry? In response it poses a method/ology of errancy – a flipping methodology – that locates post-qualitative research as an ethico-onto-epistemological political project of opening theory-practice spaces for differential matterings. Post-qualitative flipping is not an individual undertaking, it is an ecology of practices, a resonation across bodies, a navigating of movement for a politics of change, in which even barely perceptible shifts possibilize new modes of thinking and unthinking, doing and undoing.

For a number of years, new material feminists have been developing new theoretical tools, new modes of conceptual analysis, and new ethical frameworks. Object-oriented ontology, part of the speculative realism "movement," has been engaged in something similar. Yet these endeavors have often taken place in "parallel universes," despite sharing—or at least colliding around—a range of somewhat similar ontological and epistemological commitments. Composed as a diffractive musing encounter, the article brings Barad's Meeting the Universe Halfway, already a "foundational" text for new material feminism, into an encounter with a speculative realist text of the same "foundational" status, Harman's The Quadruple Object. The article develops a notion of diffractive musing as embodied, sensory struggle which instantiates intellectual generosity as a mode of critique.

Based in an analysis of a writing workshop which explored students' transition to higher education, this article puts to work theorizations of space by Massey, materiality by Barad, narrative by Cavarero, and ethics by Arendt to propose an innovative conceptualization of collaborative writing practices. The article proposes an understanding of the space of collaborative writing as a multiplicity of relations, negotiations, and practices; it considers what is to be gained from considering collaborative writing in relation to posthumanist concerns about the mattering of matter; and it illuminates how collaborative writing, when understood as the emergence of narratable selves, is a profoundly ethical practice.

This article makes the case for Posthumanist Institutional Ethnography (PIE). In doing so, it builds on and diverges from Dorothy E. Smith's post-structural work on Institutional Ethnography (IE), and speaks into recent discussions on the contested nature of ethnography. Drawing on the work of Donna Haraway, Karen Barad and Jane Bennet, and on empirical data from two recent projects, the article argues that PIE, in contesting human exceptionalism, places the human in relation to other-than-human objects, bodies and materialities, and thereby radically recasts ontology, epistemology, and ethics. Six features of PIE are identified. These features are put to work via an analysis of material moments which illuminate how gendered inequalities are produced, enacted and materialised in complex institutional ecologies. The article's theoretical and methodological contributions provide new insights into the fluid, ephemeral and affective materialisation of gendered politics in institutions.

The US National Security Agency (NSA) established a program in Information Assurance education in 1999 that established Centers for Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education (CAEIAE). While designated a success by the government, the program has been criticized over the years by program participants as less than optimal. In this paper, we review the program and identify the most serious problems. We then suggest possible solutions to these problems in order to improve the program so that it represents true excellence in IA education.

This article proposes a posthuman / materialist somatechnics approach which encourages a more nuanced, ethical, and embodied attentiveness to how humans, nature, and materialities are not separate, but actively emerge through entanglements and in co-constitutive relation with one another. Such an attentiveness recognises that we are shaped by the places in which we live and by the many others – human and nonhuman – with whom we live. It also urges the need to reshape research methodologies. To illuminate how we might more closely attend to the places in which we live, learn, teach, inquire, and research, this article offers a series of situated, speculative, and somatechnic engagements arising from our recent ventures in two separate post-industrial cities. The article is framed as a mode of writing otherwise – as a series of experimental elemental essays and the theory-practice diffractive musings they have given rise to. Taken together, the essays and musings aim to contest deficit discourses of post-industrial cities and the multiple bodies who / which inhabit them. The posthuman situated and speculative somatechnics approach we propose offers insights into unexpected and surprising new relations. We hope the elemental essays and musings which follow invite readers to take up the 'practice of the pause' in their own places and spaces.
