The idea of community involvement and empowerment has become central to politics in recent years. Governments, keen to reduce public spending and increase civic involvement, believe active communities are essential for tackling a range of social, economic and political challenges, such as crime, sustainable development and the provision of care. Abstract
In July 2019, the CDJ held a Thinkery which was attended by 57 people from 11 countries. It was an opportunity for people from a range of backgrounds to reflect on community organizing for social action, its achievements and challenges. The discussions that took place were rich and varied, highlighting both similarities and differences across the different countries. This article summarises the themes that concerned participants, wherever they were studying and practising, and considers the role the CDJ can play in continuing these valuable and challenging conversations.

Since it was last reviewed in this journal (Alcock, 2010), the Big Society agenda has begun to assume a more concrete shape. This brief review re-examines some of the opportunities and challenges associated with the Big Society agenda in the light of more recent developments and then discusses the prospects for one of its key elements – the commitment to train 5,000 community organisers.
