In recent years a phenomenon called "frugal innovation" has increasingly gained traction in the scholarly discourse; and as research reveals, it is often brought in connection with India. Apparently, India has quietly acquired the role of a pioneer for innovations that aim at combining affordability with excellence, cutting across sectoral boundaries. But what is it that makes India a forerunner for an innovation paradigm with increasing global relevance? In this paper, I propose that the "lead market" theory can explain to a quite good extent the attractiveness of India for frugal solutions. On one hand, there are concrete economic factors that give rise to resource-efficient and affordable solutions to problems faced in day-to-day life. On the other hand, frugality has been long regarded as a virtuous social value in India and the socio-cultural context of the country provides a fertile environment for the acceptance of frugal products and services on both demand and supply sides. This paper, apart from dwelling on the concept of lead markets and its application in the context of frugal innovations in India, also presents some qualitative results of an empirical survey conducted with participation of Indian students that underscore the role of culture as a key determinant for the acceptance of frugal innovation. The study indicates that frugality in India is often driven by financial considerations ("frugality 2.0"), but globally there are other, additional powerful drivers for frugal innovations, e.g. environmental concerns and rejection of status symbols. This makes a case for collaboration and cooperation between emerging and developed economies, such as India, Germany and Japan, to enable "affordable green excellence".

The term "frugal innovation" has established itself in scholarly discourse as well as in actual business practice in a short time. Nevertheless, its theoretical antecedents and underpinnings remain unclear. In this study we present results of a bibliometric analysis, which indicate that the present-day understanding of frugal innovation is shaped primarily by discourses on "bottom of the pyramid", "reverse innovation" and "disruptive innovation" and it has been targeted at "emerging economies". Even though rediscovery of frugality's virtue began in the developing world, it is spreading steadily to the economically developed world due to growing (global) demand for sustainable and affordable excellence. Frugal innovations are often associated with sustainability and development. Today, research on frugal innovations represents a very young and dynamic field: most scholarly publications and many of the references cited therein have been published in the past 5-6 years. Researchers would be, however, well-advised to incorporate insights on frugality and simplicity generated in other disciplines and other times, for example in the 1970s. Our study shows that the research on frugal innovations needs to take a calibrated, multidisciplinary approach.

Die Entwicklung von innovativen Quellen erneuerbarer Energie stellt neue Anforderungen an Simulationswerkzeuge. In dieser Dissertation werden modellbasierte Methoden zur Abbildung einer Fluid-Struktur-Interaktion am Beispiel einer Vertikalachsenturbine entwickelt. Die Kinematik einer Turbine wird durch einen Mehrkörperansatz mit flexiblen Körpern simuliert. Die Dynamik der flexiblen Körper ist durch ordnungsreduzierte Modelle repräsentiert. Die Fluiddynamik wird über Reynolds-gemittelte Navier-Stokes-Gleichungen in Verbindung mit einer Aktuatorlinienmethode abgebildet. Diese benutzt ein reduziertes Modell eines Tragfügels, der durch externe Kräfte in den Momentengleichungen angenähert wird. Die Kopplung von mechanischem und Fluid-Löser wird über einen iterativen Zwei-Wege-Ansatz durchgeführt. Die Konvergenzraten der Kopplung sind über eine Iterationsschrittvorhersage basierend auf quasi-Newton Methoden beschleunigt. Eine Vorhersage, die Systemdynamiken durch orthogonale Zerlegung (proper orthogonal decomposition) auflöst, erzielt die schnellsten Konvergenzraten. Alternativ zum partiellen ist ein monolithischer Ansatz skizziert und die Einschränkungen im Zusammenhang mit den gewählten Methoden identifiziert. Die Methoden sind mit Experimentdaten validiert und für Vertikalachsenturbinen in Luft und Wasser eingesetzt. Eine umfassende Validierung anhand von ungekoppelten Strömungsproblemen und gekoppelten, dynamischen Simulationen einer Turbine werden durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse stimmen gut mit Experimentdaten und analytischen Lösungen überein. Der Vergleich zu Methoden basierend auf Potentialströmungen oder der double-multiple streamtube method (DMST) zeigt die höhere Genauigkeit des entwickelten Simulationsbaukasten. Im Vergleich zu verfügbaren, vollvermaschten Lösungen ist der Berechnungsaufwand signifikant geringer. Abschließend wird eine Vertikalachsenturbine für Gezeitenströmungen mit flexiblen Blättern simuliert und die Verbiegungen mit einem linearen Ansatz verglichen. Die lokalen Verbiegungen werden untersucht und in Verbindung zur Interaktion von Wirbeln und Auftriebskörper gesetzt.

Die Produktion komplexer Unikatprodukte (z.b. Schiffe, Flugzeuge oder sogar Bauwerke) erfordert das arbeitsteilige Zusammenwirken vieler verschiedener Akteure. Tritt in einem Teilprozess eine Störung auf, wirkt sich diese auf parallele oder nachgelagerte Arbeitsprozesse aus und verzögert den Gesamtprozess. Das in dieser Arbeit vorgestellte digitale Assistenzsystem für kollaboratives Arbeiten bietet eine situationsspezifische Informationsbereitstellung für Werker und ermöglicht es, informative Störungsmeldungen mit wenigen Klicks zu erstellen. Akteure in relevanten Baubereichen werden automatisch benachrichtigt und Bauleiter haben die Möglichkeit, die Störungen übersichtlich zu verwalten, zu priorisieren und zu entstören. Das System steigert in hohem Maße die Transparenz im übergeordneten Prozesszusammenhang und leistet einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Durchlaufzeitreduzierung.

Eine hohe Termintreue steht für Verlässlichkeit und wirkt sich positiv auf den unternehmerischen Erfolg aus. Dennoch fällt es vielen Unternehmen schwer, eine hohe Termintreue zu erzielen. Die Termintreue ist von zwei Größen abhängig: dem Rückstand und der Reihenfolgeabweichung. Die vorliegende Arbeit zeigt, welches Potenzial die Reihenfolgebildung besitzt, um Abweichungen im Zugang auszugleichen. Hierzu wird zunächst die Reihenfolgeabweichung im Abgang für ein Arbeitssystem in Abhängigkeit ihrer Einflussgrößen modelliert. Neben der intensiven Betrachtung der Reihenfolgebildung zeigt die Arbeit den Einfluss des Rückstands im Zugang auf den Rückstand im Abgang eines Arbeitssystems sowie den Einfluss eines Rückstands im Zugang auf Rückstand und Reihenfolgeabweichungen in komplexen Materialflüssen. Eine ausführliche Simulationsstudie untersucht und verifiziert die hohe Modellierungsgüte der entwickelten Modelle. Abschließend bestätigt die Anwendung bei zwei Unternehmen die Praxistauglichkeit der erarbeiteten Modelle.
