Abstract. Scaling behaviour in nonstationary time series can be successfully detected using the detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA). Observational time series often do not show a stable and uniform scaling behaviour, given by the presence of a unique clear scaling region. The deviations from uniform power-law scaling, which suggest the presence of changing dynamics in the system under study, can be identified and quantified using an appropriate instability index. In this framework, the scaling behaviour of the 1981–2007 seismicity in Umbria-Marche (central Italy), which is one of the most seismically active areas in Italy, was investigated. Significant deviations from uniform power-law scaling in the seismic temporal fluctuations were revealed mostly linked with the occurrence of rather large earthquakes or seismic clusters.

Abstract. Recently, it has been proposed a new method to investigate the linear/nonlinear properties of a time series by decomposing it into two sub-series: magnitude and sign sub-series (Ashkenazy et al., 2003). The long-range correlation properties of the magnitude and sign sub-series relate to nonlinear and linear behavior of the original time series respectively. We apply this method to the hourly time variability of geoelectrical signals, measured from January 2001 to September 2002 by four stations installed in Basilicata region (southern Italy). Three stations (Giuliano, Marsico and Tito) are located in a seismic area, and one (Laterza) in a low-seismicity area. A site-dependence of the linear/nonlinear properties has been shown, revealing that different dynamics govern signals measured in seismic and low-seismicity areas.

Abstract. Using the Taiwan Central Weather Bureau earthquake catalogue, the crustal seismicity of Taiwan was analyzed by means of a nonextensive approach. The time span of the analyzed catalogue is from 1 January 1990 to 30 November 2007, and only earthquakes with magnitude M≥2.0 were considered. Our findings reveal that the nonextensive statistics furnishes a very good prediction of the cumulative magnitude distribution of crustal seismicity in Taiwan, even if the aftershocks are removed, indicating that the approach is robust for clustered as well as declustered seismicity.

Abstract. Temporal clustering structures were identified and quantified in fire sequences recorded from 1980 to 2005 in Continental Portugal, by using the Allan Factor statistics, a statistical tool suited to reveal clustering behaviour in point processes. The obtained results show the presence of daily and annual periodicities, superimposed onto a scaling behaviour, which features the sequence of wildfires as a fractal time process with a rather high degree of time-clusterization of the events.

Abstract. The historical and instrumental catalog of the Absheron-Prebalkhan region in the Caspian Sea area was analyzed in order to reveal the existence of temporal clustering in the time dynamics of the seismicity. The timespan of the catalog is from 1842 to 2012 and the magnitude of the events ranges from 2.5 to 6.8. The Gutenberg-Richter analysis indicates 4.0 as the completeness magnitude of the catalog. The temporal clustering analysis was performed over the sequence of events with magnitude M ≥ 4 by using the methods of the Allan Factor and the coefficient of variation. Both the methods have revealed the presence of time-clusterized structures in the time dynamics of large events in the Absheron-Prebalkhan region. Such findings, which suggest a non-Poissonian behavior of the seismicity of the investigated area, could contribute to a deeper knowledge of the time dynamics of the seismicity and to a better assessment of the relative seismic hazard.

Abstract. The time-clustering behaviour of the seismicity of the Caucasus spanning from 1960 to 2010 was investigated. The analysis was performed on the whole and aftershock-depleted catalogues by means of the method of Allan Factor, which permits the identification and quantification of time-clustering in point processes. The whole sequence is featured by two scaling regimes with the scaling exponent at intermediate timescales lower than that at high timescales, and a crossover that could be probably linked with aftershock time activiation. The aftershock-depleted sequence is characterized by higher time-clustering degree and the presence of a periodicity probably correlated with the cyclic earth surface load variations on regional and local scales, e.g. with snow melting in Caucasian mountains and large Enguri dam operations. The obtained results were corroborated by the application of two surrogate methods: the random shuffling and the generation of Poissonian sequences.

Abstract. The crustal and sub-crustal seismicity that occurred in the Vrancea area from 1978 to 2008 is investigated. Due to quarry blast contamination, the analysis of the crustal seismicity was restricted to events that occurred between 20 km and 60 km, considering sub-crustal events as all those that occurred at depths larger than 60 km. The completeness magnitude was estimated between 2.3 and 2.5 for the crustal seismicity and between 2.9 and 3.1 for the sub-crustal one. The Gutenberg-Richter b-values show clear differences between crustal and sub-crustal seismicity, with values around 0.9 and 1.3–1.4, respectively. The analysis performed in this study represents a preliminary issue for the seismic hazard assessment of surrounding regions like Moldova, for which the earthquakes generated in Vrancea represent an important threat.

Abstract. The fault plane solutions (FPS) of 247 seismic events were used for stress field investigation of the region. The eigenvectors t, p, b, and moment tensor M components for each FPS were defined and computed numerically. The obtained results confirm the hypothesis of subduction-type intermediate depth earthquakes for the Vrancea seismic region and this may be considered the first approximation of the stress field for the whole of the Vrancea (intermediate depth) region.

Abstract. Geoelectrical fluctuations measured in seismic areas have been attributed to stress and strain changes, associated with earthquakes. The complex nature of this problem has suggested the development of monitoring stations in order to perform geophysical monitoring for a long time period and with a high sample rate. In this paper, anomalous geoelectrical fluctuations of SP signals recorded in the S. Loja basin, Lucano Apennine chain by Tito and Picerno stations, and linked with seismic activity, are analyzed and discussed.

Abstract. Multifractal fluctuations in the time dynamics of geoelectrical data, recorded in a seismic area of southern Italy, have been revealed using the Multifractal Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (MF-DFA), which allows to detect multifractality in nonstationary signals. Our findings show that the geoelectrical time series, recorded in the seismic area of southern Apennine Chain (Italy), is multifractal. The time evolution of the multifractality suggests that the multifractal degree increases prior the occurrence of earthquakes. This study aims to propose another approach to investigate the complex dynamics of earthquake-related geoelectrical signals.

Abstract. Since 2000 the Institute of Methodologies for the Environmental Analysis (National Council of Research, Tito, Italy) installed a geophysical monitoring network able to detect geoelectric, geochemic and seismometric parameters in seismic areas of southern Italy. During this period a very large data-base of geophysical time series has been organized and it is actually available to assess robust statistical methodologies to identify geophysical anomalous patterns linked with local seismicity. To better understand the influence of rain and cultural noise on geoelectrical signals (Self Potential), during May 2004 we drilled in Tito station a 20 m-depth hole to measure the SP vertical component. The array is characterized by five Pb-PbCl2 electrodes put at different depths. The common electrode is fixed at 20 m. In this work we present some electrical anomalies probably correlated with local seismic activity on vertical dipoles recorded in Tito station.

Abstract. We studied the time fluctuations in the dynamics of geoelectrical data, recorded in Tito site, which is located in a seismic area of southern Italy. We used the Fisher Information Measure, which is a powerful tool to investigate complex and nonstationary signals. The time evolution of the Fisher Information Measure calculated for our signal reveals links with the earthquakes occurring in the investigated area.

Abstract. We investigated by means of nonlinear tools the temporal distribution of 1983-2003 seismicity of the Umbria-Marche region, Central Italy, that was struck by a strong event (M=5.8) on 26 September 1997. Information entropy analysis has been performed over the full and the aftershock-depleted catalogue. We analysed the series of the interevent times between successive earthquakes and the series of their magnitudes. The time evolution of this measure shows a clear anomalous behaviour in correspondence with the stronger event, more evident in the full catalogue than in the aftershock-depleted one.

Abstract. Seismic electric signals (SES) have been considered precursors of strong earthquakes, and, recently, their dynamics have been investigated within the Natural Time Domain (NTD) (Varotsos et al., 2004). In this paper we apply the NTD approach and the chaotic map signal analysis to two geoelectric time series recorded in a seismically very active area of Mexico, where two strong earthquakes, M=6.6 and M=7.4, occurred on 24 October 1993 and 14 September 1995, respectively. The low frequency geoelectric signals measured display periods with dichotomic behavior. Our findings point out to an increase of the correlation degree of the geoelectric signals before the occurrence of strong earthquakes; furthermore, the power spectrum and entropy in NTD are in good agreement with the results published in literature. Our results were validated by the analysis of a chaotic map simulated time series, which revealed the typical characteristics of artificial noise.

Abstract. The time dynamics of the aftershock sequence of the Al-Hoceima (Morocco) earthquake of 24 February 2004 has been investigated. The sequence of the occurrence times of the events with threshold magnitude Mth≥3.2 is characterized by a time-clustering behavior, identified using different fractal methods (Fano Factor, Allan Factor, Count-based Periodogram), well suited to reveal scaling features in point processes. The obtained results not only show the presence of memory phenomena and correlation structures in the Al-Hoceima aftershocks, but also furnish quantitatively the estimate of the magnitude of such correlation by means of the estimate of the scaling exponent α.
