In: Sociologia urbana e rurale, Heft 121, S. 143-159
ISSN: 0392-4939
This study focuses on different groups of Palestinian citizens of Israel, representing more than 20% of the total Israeli population. Working on the link between urban space and social diversity, the authors will capture complex dynamics of segregation and social inequalities ex-isting among different Arab communities. This research aims to promote a new approach that, overcoming the stereotyped vision of two social monolithic blocks at war with each other - Jews and Arabs- shows a complex social mosaic of multiple cultural identities, characterizing the contemporary Israeli society.
Giovani newcomers a Milano ai tempi del Covid-19: la nuova vulnerabilità urbana
In: Cambio: Rivista sulle Trasformazioni Sociali, Band 11, Heft 22, S. 13-26
ISSN: 2239-1118
The conversion of the urban economy in a creative and knowledge industry dimension required a strong strategic investment in improving the attractiveness of cities, focusing, above all, on young talents. Such a process happened without considering the distance between high cultural capital and low economic capital of this population which, from the housing point of view, translates into extreme fragility, showing the issue of affordability in all its contradictions. The outbreak of the pandemic has exposed social and housing weakness of young talents who represent the new urban vulnerability of post-industrial cities. The paper is based on empirical research carried out during the first lockdown on a sample of newcomer families residing in Milan since less than 5 years, aimed at understanding how this population experienced the emergency phase between 30 April and 24 May 2020. The results highlight aspects of economic fragility and social isolation due to the lack of social networks in the neighborhood. At the same time, however, in times of crisis there is a significant increase of relationships, interactions and exchanges between subjects, more likely to create or enhance a sense of intersubjective solidarity. Furthermore, for many new residents the experience of confinement in the attractive city triggered a process of change of future residential preferences, assuming new possible scenarios in the postpandemic city.
The Race to the House in the Attractive City: the Access to Housing for Young People in Milan ; La corsa alla casa nella città attrattiva: l'inserimento abitativo dei giovani a Milano
From EXPO 2015 to the COVID-19 pandemic, Milan has been experiencing a period of urban attractiveness and competitiveness on both national and international level. The opportunities generated by a dynamic job market and the high-quality university training have contributed to attract an increasingly large share of young people to the city. However, many youth struggle to access affordable housing in the city as rents are very high and there is a lack of adequate public housing policies to support such demand. This paper investigates the housing pathways of young newcomers to Milan in search for work or study opportunities. Through the analysis of 44 semi-structured interviews with young students and workers between 20 and 35, this paper discusses the lights and shadows of urban attractiveness. While the city has a strong appeal to young people, it is not inclusive for those on low-income. In this context, promoting inclusive housing policies for the younger generations is a necessary condition to guarantee equality of opportunity and social mobility. Attraverso l'analisi di 44 interviste semi-strutturate a giovani studenti e lavoratori fra i 20 e 35 anni, l'articolo discute luci e ombre dell'attrattività urbana.
