Résumé Cet article propose une analyse de l'évolution de la société sud-africaine depuis l'apartheid. La transition démocratique a conduit à une société divisée en trois classes à peu près égales : une classe moyenne, une classe ouvrière et un sous-prolétariat, dont la situation s'est détériorée depuis 1994. L'accroissement des inégalités durant la dernière décennie plaide pour une révision de la politique économique du gouvernement dans un sens plus social.

In zwei Beiträgen eines Dossiers über Südafrika zehn Jahre nach dem Ende der Apartheid werden der Übergang des Landes von der Rassen- in eine Klassengesellschaft und die damit zusammenhängenden sozialen Probleme wie Arbeitslosigkeit und Armut thematisiert. Anhand von Statistiken wird deutlich, dass soziale Unterschiede noch immer stark mit der Hautfarbe der Menschen korrelieren. Als die große Zukunftsfrage wird das Problem benannt, ausreichend Beschäftigungs- und Einkommensmöglichkeiten für die wachsende Bevölkerung zu schaffen. (DÜI-Kör)

The author of this booklet argues that apartheid could only be abolished successfully if the transition to a new system will take place in a relatively orderly manner and during a period of time in which there will be opportunities to restructure and strengthen the economy. This would be essential if the economy is to create more job opportunities, relieve some of the most serious poverty conditions and strengthen its tax capacity
