Sont présentés ici différents exemples concrets du traitement visuel et sonore de la réalité sociale tirés de la production télévisuelle courante et dont la réception a été soumise à expérimentation auprès de jeunes scolaires. Sont identifiés quelques-uns des pièges ou des effets pervers que doivent éviter les films à visée scientifique. Plus généralement, ces études de cas autorisent quelques développements dans les domaines de la théorie et de la méthode en anthropologie ou en sociologie visuelles.

During half a century, the sociology of Catholicism in France implemented two different, but in fact not exclusive, ways of approaching religious practice. The first one, with Gabriel Le Bras and Fernand Boulard, considered primarily the weight of historical contingencies and territorial constraints. The second one, with Emile Pin, or with François-André Isambert and Jean-Paul Terrenoire, was more concerned with the social and economic context. In all cases, the social reality, religious practice, spatial unit of reference and sociological approach were conceived differently, as was also the distance taken by the researcher towards the ecclesiastical institution.

Centered on the contextual determination of religions practice, this study, using multiple and stepwise regression techniques, finds a significant relationship between the internal variations of the occupational structure of the labor force and the fluctuations in the level of different Roman Catholic worship practices such as pascalisation (Easter duty), messalisation (Mass attendance) and cenalisation (frequent Communion).
Two spacial frames of reference are used in this study: the departement (thirty-four of these administrative districts grouping about thirty countries each are analysed), and the whole (empirical aggregate of the rural counties of these departments). The relationship is stronger and better explained in the first case. However, the departmental variations suggest that it is not a simple and uniform connection. All the observations have to be interpreted in terms of a genuine theory of the determination of religion by the economic basis of society.
