Increased concern about the traditional practice of sexual mutilation of women in some traditional societies has led to an international campaign for its abolition. Various religious & cultural beliefs associated with two forms of the practice -- excision & infibulation -- are examined among Arab & black African Muslims, black African Christians, & animists. The practice has been abhorred by feminists as a form of restricting F sexuality, & was the controversial main topic at a UN conference (1980). A survey of groups working to end sexual mutilation is included. It is argued that major emphasis should be placed on changing attitudes about women's sexuality. 14 References. D. Dunseath.
