Covid-19 and the government measures taken to combat the pandemic have fueled populist protests in Germany and Austria. Social media played a key role in the emergence of these protests. This study argues that the topic of Covid-19 has triggered populist user comments on Facebook pages of German and Austrian mass media. Drawing on media psychology, this article theorizes populist comments as an expression of "reactance," sparked by repeated "fear appeals" in posts about Covid-19. Several hypotheses are derived from this claim and tested on a dataset of N = 25,121 Facebook posts, posted between January 2020 and May 2021 on nine pages of German and Austrian mass media, and 1.4 million corresponding user comments. To measure content-based variables automatically, this study develops, validates, and applies dictionaries. The study finds that the topic of Covid-19 did trigger populist user comments and that this effect grew over time. Surprisingly, neither the stringency of government measures nor mentions of elitist actors were found to have the expected amplifying effect. The study discusses the findings against the background of governing the ongoing crisis and worrisome developments in the online public sphere.

Right-wing populist user comments on social media are said to impair online deliberation. Right-wing populism's anti-pluralist and conflict-centered message might hinder deliberative debates, which are characterized by reciprocity, arguments, sourcing, politeness, and civility. Although right-wing populism has been found to foster user interaction on social media, few empirical studies have examined its impact on the scope and deliberative quality of user debates. This study focuses on debates on 10 Facebook pages of Austrian and Slovenian mass media during the so-called "refugee crisis" of 2015–2016. Proceeding in two steps, we first analyze how right-wing populist user comments affect the number of reply comments using a dataset of N = 281,115 Facebook comments and a validated, automated content analysis. In a second step, we use a manual, quantitative content analysis to investigate how right-wing populist comments affect the deliberative quality of N = 1,413 reply comments. We test five hypotheses in carefully modeled regression analyses. Our findings show that right-wing populist comments trigger replies but impair their deliberative quality. People-centric comments decrease the probability of arguments in replies, and anti-immigrant comments spark incivility. Countering populism further increases impoliteness. We discuss our findings against the backdrop of an increasingly uncivil online public sphere and populism's ambivalent relationship with democracy.

Abstract
Studies have highlighted differences between right-wing populism in Western and Central Eastern Europe but
suggested that discourses have been converging since the so-called "refugee crisis" in 2015. This article examines this claim by
focusing on right-wing populist frames and affective communication on migration in Austria and Slovenia. Taking a
communication-centred approach, the study is based on a critical frame analysis of 70 speeches from far-right to centre-right
parties in parliamentary debates on migration between 2015 and 2019. The results show that right-wing populist discourses in the
two adjacent countries have aligned in appealing to affects, particularly to fear and in framing migration as a threat to security
and culture. Despite differences in mobilizing affects, the findings indicate a mutual alignment of right-wing populism beyond
borders, signalling a potential risk of a broader right-wing populist bloc unified by fear of migration.
