Reconstructing Public Housing unearths Liverpool's hidden history of radical alternatives to municipal housing development and builds a vision of how we might reconstruct public housing on more democratic and cooperative foundations. In this critical urban history, Matthew Thompson brings to light how and why this remarkable city became host to two pioneering social movements in collective housing and urban regeneration experimentation. In the 1970s, Liverpool produced one of Britain's largest, most democratic and socially innovative housing co-op movements, including the country's first new-build co-op to be designed, developed and owned by its member-residents. Four decades later, in some of the very same neighbourhoods, several campaigns for urban community land trusts are growing from the grassroots – including the first ever architectural or housing project to be nominated for and win, in 2015, the art world's coveted Turner Prize. Thompson traces the connections between these movements; how they were shaped by, and in turn transformed, the politics, economics, culture and urbanism of Liverpool. Drawing on theories of capitalism and cooperativism, property and the commons, institutional change and urban transformation, Thompson reconsiders Engels' housing question, reflecting on how collective alternatives work in, against and beyond the state and capital, in often surprising and contradictory ways.

AbstractInnovation is perhaps the buzzword in local economic development policy. Associated narrowly with neoliberal ideas, conventional notions of innovation—like its capitalocentric counterparts, enterprise and entrepreneurialism—may promise higher productivity, global competitiveness and technological progress but do not fundamentally change the 'rules of the game'. In contrast, an emerging field reimaginessocialinnovation as disruptive change in social relations and institutional configurations. This article explores the conceptual and political differences within this pre‐paradigmatic field, and argues for a more transformative understanding of social innovation. Building on the work of David Graeber, I mobilize the novel constructs of 'play' and 'games' to advance our understanding of the contradictory process of institutionalizing social innovation for urban transformation. This is illustrated through a case study of Liverpool, where diverse approaches to innovation are employed in attempts to resolve longstanding socio‐economic problems. Dominant market‐ and state‐led economic development policies—likened to a 'regeneration game'—are contrasted with more experimental, creative, democratic and potentially more effective forms of social innovation, seeking urban change through playing with the rules of the game. I conclude by considering how the play–game dialectic illuminates and reframes the way transformative social innovation might be cultivated by urban policy, the contradictions this entails, and possible ways forward.

Abstract
Much has been made of the way that many portrayals of Jack the Ripper travel upon a familiar narrative path, where the morally questionable prostitutes are rendered helpless by a lone male figure lurking in the dark alleys of 1888 Whitechapel. However, such a construction of the Ripper has resulted in an often reductive perspective on Victorian society, with many films regarding it as divided into either 'proper' Victorians who followed the true gender norms of their time, or outliers who instead subverted these very 'moral' notions. Roy Ward Baker's film Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde (1971) attempts to subvert these ideas by incorporating both the Ripper figure and Robert Louis Stevenson's gothic characters, both of which have been intertwined in the past. In Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde, though, Baker goes further by constructing two Rippers – one in the male scientist Dr Jekyll and the other in the female Mrs (or Sister) Hyde. Though the former can be attributed to many tropes that have become associated with the Ripper, the latter challenges not only archetypes of the Whitechapel Murderer but also greater questions of gender and transgression within Victorian society. Indeed, Hyde's methods of greater autonomy within a patriarchal society bring to mind Slavoj Zizek's notions of the femme fatale. This article will therefore argue how Baker's film, through its portrayal of both Jekyll and Hyde, exhibits a greater willingness to challenge old notions of Victorian gender politics. Furthermore, it will show how these two 'Rippers' symbolize various fears and anxieties about the Victorian society and of the Ripper in particular.

With Assembling Understandings, the Canadian Social Economy Hub has developed a thematic summary of the CSERP outputs, exploring some of the dominant crosscutting themes within the research findings. This approach is very similar to a grounded theory approach wherein the authors, while reviewing the various available documents, 'listened' to the data for emerging themes. Care was taken to engage with the work from multiple angles, taking note of both diversity and unity within the body of research. The challenge in this form of research was for the authors to construct each chapter based on what was covered in the research as opposed to the expanse of what can be covered under each theme. In this way, the overall picture provided here is not a complete analysis of Canada's social economy landscape, but rather provides an overview of the CSERP research findings in the following thematic areas: Mapping, Social Enterprise, Co-operatives, Indigenous Peoples, Organizational Governance & Capacity, Social Finance, and Public Policy. Each thematic area had representation in over 50 CSERP projects, with some chapters involving as many as 85 relevant research products. As a result, Assembling Understandings is a useful reference point for both reviewing the available CSERP documents and identifying where further research may be required.
