Critically examines the Tony Blair's concept of the "stakeholder economy" & New Labour's potential response to it based on a reading of New Labour's economic literature, not just the comments from the Left of those who would like to radicalize it or Blair's vague comments & brief PR sound-bites. Various themes located in the party's economic literature are critically assessed including the enhancement of Britain's competitiveness, moving from short-term investment to long-term investment strategies, developing a discourse of supply-side economic strategies, the redefinition of efficiency to resonate as a socialist complement, investment in people that enhances efficiency & competitiveness, & the regulation of power rather than its appropriation by New Labour. An alternative, radical conception of stakeholding is reviewed addressing power-holding in public, non-monopolistic ways so that New Labour can attempt to redress the loss of lower classes to the power of capital. The overall emphasis of New Labour policy is not about increasing stakeholder investment in economic activity through microeconomic policy, but microeconomic stability through price & exchange rate stability. It is concluded that poorly articulated future economic policy offered by New Labour in concert with the economically & politically powerful will not create invested stakeholders, but likely sow the seeds of disappointment.
