"Grete Meisel-Hess (1879-1922), a contemporary of Freud, Schnitzler, and Klimt, was a feminist voice in early-twentieth-century modernist discourse. Born in Prague to Jewish parents and raised in Vienna, she became a literary presence with her 1902 novel Fanny Roth. Influenced by many of her contemporaries, she also criticized their notions of gender and sexuality. Relocating to Berlin, she continued to write fiction and began publishing on sexology and the women's movement. Helga Thorson's book combines a literary-cultural exploration of modernism in Vienna and Berlin with a biography of Meisel-Hess and a critical analysis of her works. Focusing on Meisel-Hess's negotiations of feminism, modernism, and Jewishness, it illustrates the dynamic interplay between gender, sexuality, and race/ethnicity in Austrian and German modernism. Analyzing Meisel-Hess's fiction as well as her sexological studies, Thorson argues that Meisel-Hess posited herself as both a "New Woman" and the writer of the "New Woman." The book draws on extensive archival research that uncovered new sources including an unpublished drama, letters scattered in various collections across Europe, and Meisel-Hess's medical history. Until now there have been only limited secondary sources about Meisel-Hess, most containing errors and omissions regarding her biography. This is the first book on Meisel-Hess in English"--

Within the context of early-twentieth-century medical discourses, this article focuses on the masking and unmasking of identity in N. O. Body's Memoirs of a Man's Maiden Years ( Aus eines Mannes Mädchenjahren ), an autobiography of a German "pseudo-hermaphrodite" published in 1907. Highlighting the author's attempts to normalize the protagonist's indeterminate body within both a medical and a narrative framework that attempt to negate the body's "otherness," I argue that Body's autobiography actually exposes the protagonist's ambiguity and multiple positionalities that threaten to spill out of the structures set up to contain them. Furthermore, the author's attempt to mask his own Jewish identity while at the same time superimposing "Jewishness" back on the body of the protagonist illustrates the complex intersectionality in this text that is simultaneously hidden and on display. The chapters presented explore how varied agents of memory -- including the music we listen to, the (his)stories that we tell, and the political and social actions that we engage in -- create narratives of the past that critically contest and challenge xenophobic and nationalistic renderings of political possibilities for Europe and Canada. The goal of the volume as a whole is to foster innovative interdisciplinary and intercultural discussions on memory discourses as political, social, and creative collective ventures. In addition, the volume aims to contribute to the development of curriculum geared towards exploring the politics of memory in shaping present-day tensions and conflicts. Specific themes explored in the volume include: 1) How memory politics and narratives of the past frame and influence current political decisions and decision-making processes 2) How memory discourses and narratives of the past can be deployed as agents of change and resistance to destabilizing and fracturing discourses 3) How cultural narratives of the past and memorialization are interwoven with current public policy challenges relating to multiculturalism and diversity 4) The role of integrative national and transnational identities in the face of rising nationalism and xenophobic discourses ; "Narratives of Memory, Migration, and Xenophobia in the European Union and Canada" explores the role of memory and narratives of the past political tools and opportunities for cultural reconciliation. This is an edited volume that compiles the proceedings of an interdisciplinary conference and graduate field school that took place in the summer of 2017. The conference and field school brought together emerging and established scholars, students, musicians, composers from three different European nations (France, Hungary, and Germany) studying the European migrant crisis and Canadian students engaged in understanding Canadian history and experience with genocide, colonialism, and systemic violence and oppression of indigenous peoples. ...
