AbstractChild development accounts (CDAs) provide subsidised savings accounts for children to help meet life course needs. While now largely forgotten, the Child Trust Fund was an innovative savings scheme for UK children that sought to generate a capital sum when they turned 18. The first children to receive these funds reached this point in late 2020 so it is timely to review the impact of this national scheme, which by 2022 had £10 bn saved in it. We consider how far the Child Trust Fund led to higher levels of savings for those children who were eligible for it and whether there is any evidence it created a savings habit in young people and their parents. We use six waves of longitudinal ONS Wealth and Assets Survey data. While we find a small effect on savings, with children from better‐off families benefiting the most, there is little evidence of a meaningful effect on savings habits. Nonetheless, the policy's impact on generating even small amounts of savings could be important, especially as most children in the UK have no savings. The study offers policy recommendations to support children's savings in the UK, based on the significant example of asset‐based welfare policy that the CTF provides.

The Xuanwei area of Yunnan Province, China, is one of the regions suffering from the highest occurrence and mortality rate of lung cancer in the world. Local residents tend to use bituminous coal as domestic fuel, which causes serious indoor air pollution and is established as the main carcinogen. After the local government carried out furnace and stove reform work, lung cancer rate including incidence and mortality among residents remains high. We herein wonder if there are specific mechanisms at protein level for the development of non‐small‐cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in this area. We investigated the changes of protein profiling in tumour of the patients from Xuanwei area. Tandem mass tag (TMT) was employed to screen the differential proteins between carcinoma and para‐carcinoma tissues. We identified a total of 422 differentially expressed proteins, among which 162 proteins were significantly up‐regulated and 260 were downregulated compared to para‐carcinoma tissues. Many of the differentially expressed proteins were related to extracellular matrix (ECM)‐receptor interaction, focal adhesion, PI3K/AKT pathway and ferroptosis. Further experiments on the two differential proteins, thioredoxin 2 (TXN2) and haptoglobin (HP), showed that the change of their expressions could make the lung cancer cell lines more resistant to erastin or RSL‐induced ferroptosis in vitro, and promote the growth of tumour in nude mice. In conclusion, this study revealed that aberrant regulation of ferroptosis may involve in the development of lung cancer in Xuanwei area.

As one of the common natural disasters, drought is extremely destructive to agriculture. Drought has risen in recent years, so how to effectively monitor drought has become the focus of attention of relevant government departments. When drought occurs, irrigation measures will be taken in the irrigation district for drought resistance and disaster reduction. At this time, drought monitoring based on meteorological data and remote sensing index has certain limitations. Based on the surface temperature data of MODIS, this paper extracted the irrigation area information in the irrigated district, compared the drought monitoring results of irrigated area with those based on precipitation anomaly percentage and vegetation anomaly index, and analysed the importance of agricultural drought monitoring based on remote sensing of irrigated area. This paper considers that it is necessary to consider the distribution of the irrigated area when conducting drought monitoring in the irrigation district, it can improve the accuracy of agricultural monitoring, and it can provide the basis for government and agriculture and other related departments to manage water resources and formulate drought-resistance policies.

Introduction Numerous studies have found associations between characteristics of urban environments and risk factors for dementia and cognitive decline, such as physical inactivity and obesity. However, the contribution of urban environments to brain and cognitive health has been seldom examined directly. This cohort study investigates the extent to which and how a wide range of characteristics of urban environments influence brain and cognitive health via lifestyle behaviours in mid-aged and older adults in three cities across three continents. Methods and analysis Participants aged 50 79 years and living in preselected areas stratified by walkability, air pollution and socioeconomic status are being recruited in Melbourne (Australia), Barcelona (Spain) and Hong Kong (China) (n=1800 total; 600 per site). Two assessments taken 24 months apart will capture changes in brain and cognitive health. Cognitive function is gauged with a battery of eight standardised tests. Brain health is assessed using MRI scans in a subset of participants. Information on participants' visited locations is collected via an interactive web-based mapping application and smartphone geolocation data. Environmental characteristics of visited locations, including the built and natural environments and their by-products (e.g., air pollution), are assessed using geographical information systems, online environmental audits and self-reports. Data on travel and lifestyle behaviours (e.g., physical and social activities) and participants' characteristics (e.g., sociodemographics) are collected using objective and/or self-report measures. Ethics and dissemination The study has been approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of the Australian Catholic University, the Institutional Review Board of the University of Hong Kong and the Parc de Salut Mar Clinical Research Ethics Committee of the Government of Catalonia. IntroduCtIon Dementia prevention is a global health priority. Around 40 50million people suffer from dementia worldwide and these figures are expected to almost double by 20301 2 due to population ageing.3 Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) that is not severe enough to meet strengths and limitations of this study ? By recruiting participants from residential areas stratified by walkability, air pollution and socioeconomic status from three cities varying in exposures and lifestyle behaviours, this study will allow a robust estimation of dose response relationships of urban design and the relevant by-products (e.g., pollution) with brain and cognitive health. ? This study will provide a comprehensive assessment of multiple environmental factors and multiple lifestyle behaviours by which environments may affect brain and cognitive health. This will allow improved understanding of which environmental characteristics are related to brain and cognitive outcomes and by which mechanisms. ? The focus on locations visited for daily activities rather than only residential neighbourhoods will enable a more accurate estimation of individual exposure to features of the urban environment. ? The comprehensive assessment of lifestyle behaviours and individual-level moderators (apolipoprotein E genotype, physical health and personality traits) will assist the identification of optimal patterns of lifestyle activities that can be integrated in individually tailored lifestyle interventions, taking into account individual genetic factors and environmental living conditions. ? Current resources can support only two assessments, 24 months apart. This may not be a sufficiently long period to detect changes in certain exposures and/or outcomes. by copyright.
