Im Zentrum des Beitrags stehen die russisch-chinesischen Beziehungen. Der Frage der bilateralen strategischen Partnerschaft, der noch nicht endgültig gelösten Grenzfrage und den Problemem der Außenhandelsbeziehungen wird dabei besonderes Augenmerk geschenkt. Ohne die Zusammenarbeit mit China hält der Autor eine stabile Entwicklung des russischen Fernen Ostens nicht für möglich. According to the author, under the current conditions the Russian Federation has no direct enemies, whether ideological or political, nor does it have formal allies. It is open for all-round cooperation with every country in the West and in the East. Eastward, Russia's interests include political stability which makes it possible to resolve the pressing problems of comprehensive development in Siberia and the Far East in close cooperation with the countries in Northeast Asia. He (the author) explores Russian interests in Northeast Asia with special reference to general political setup in the region and economic cooperation. (DÜI-Sen)

The author reviews the USSR's proposals, put forward in 1986 by the Soviet leader M. Gorbachev in his Vladivostok speech, aimed at security and co-operation in the Asian Pacific region. M. Titarenko also discusses a new set of constructive ideas and proposals advanced by Gorbachev in his Krasnoyarsk speech of September 1988 aimed at finding solutions to the crisis situations in the region. The author briefly discusses normalization of relations between the USSR and China. This normalization of relations between them as a major factor in defusing the confrontation in Asia and the Pacific. Agreement between these two countries to work for a total demilitarization along their common frontier.
