This monograph provides an analysis of the economic performance and living standard in Czechoslovakia and its successor states, Hungary, and Poland since 1945. The novelty of the book lies in its broad comparative perspective: it places East Central Europe in a wider European framework that underlines the themes of regional disparities and European commonalities. Going beyond the traditional growth paradigm, the author systematically studies the historical patterns of consumption, leisure, and quality of life—aspects that Tomka argues can best be considered in relation to one other. In einem ersten Schritt werden zunächst die wichtigsten Merkmale der westeuropäischen Wohlfahrtsentwicklung nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg vor dem Hintergrund der Entfaltung des europäischen Sozialmodells skizziert. Im Anschluss folgt die Darlegung der ostmitteleuropäischen Entwicklungstendenzen vor 1990. In einem dritten Schritt werden sodann die Entwicklungen der Wohlfahrtssysteme im Zuge des Transformationsprozesses seit 1990 behandelt. Ziel der Untersuchung ist es, neben den in der Fachliteratur am häufigsten analysierten sozialen Ausgaben auch andere wichtige Merkmale vorzustellen sowie auf Aspekte einzugehen, die die langfristige Untersuchung der eingetretenen Veränderungen und ihrer Dynamik ermöglichen. Dementsprechend schließen die betrachteten Variablen die relative Höhe der Sozialausgaben, die wichtigsten strukturellen Dimensionen des Sozialversicherungssystems, die Charakteristika der sozialen Rechte, die Kontrollrechte der Wohlfahrtsklienten über das System und die organisatorischen Formen der Sozialversicherungssysteme mit ein. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg werden die Unterschiede zwischen den west- und ostmitteleuropäischen Wohlfahrtssystemen allmählich größer, anfangs in allen untersuchten Bereichen. Später verfügen die Wohlfahrtssysteme in den Ländern der Region neben speziellen Charakteristika (z.B. Höhe und Struktur der Sozialausgaben) über Merkmale sowohl der skandinavischen sozialdemokratischen Wohlfahrtsregime als auch der kontinentaleuropäischen konservativen Systeme. (ICG2)
