Abstract
What is an object? A prior question: What is objecthood? Au fond, and to logic's eye, object is a role to be played with respect to a thought (on a decomposition). It is to be a countable which that thought represent as being some way for such a countable to be; what restores the business of truth-of to that of truth outright. What plays that role for some given thought is then an object with respect to that thought. Given this, there are corresponding absolute notions, to be fit for this role, and to be fit only for this role. So the fundamental task here is identifying the conditions on playing this role at all. All this is a contribution, however limited, to a topic called 'ontology'. This last word also occurs in the plural in several contexts. The end of this essay considers how these notions (non-countable, and the several countables) might relate, and what assumptions underlie what some have seen them to.

PUBLISHED ; Kate O?Brien?s 1938 novel Pray for the Wanderer illustrates the polemics of place operating in bourgeois Ireland in 1937, the year of the Irish Constitutional referendum. O?Brien?s subtle and audacious literary technique charts the social and political landscapes of a strongly Catholic Saorst?t Eireann (Irish Free State) which emerged during the 1930s. Accordingly Pray for the Wanderer employs a metonymic equivalent of O?Brien?s native Limerick, located in the West of Ireland, to represent a dimension of the Irish postcolonial experience. The theoretical lenses trained upon Pray for the Wanderer which bring the literary geographies of O?Brien?s writing into focus consist primarily of methods which excavate the prose landscape of her text by employing an application of Mikhail Bakhtin?s Historical Poetics.

PUBLISHED ; In James Joyce's Finnegans wake, the political and sexual mores placed upon Irish culture by the presence of the British Empire and the Catholic Church during the late colonial and early post colonial period of modern Irish history, are extirpated in a re-telling of the Biblical fall from grace. From a historical perspective, the political fall of Charles Stewart Parnell, the Protestant Irish Home Rule leader, in the late nineteenth century, which is echoed in Joyce's text, presaged the return of violence as a means to achieve independence from Britain. But Joyce sensed that despite the achievement of an Irish state, personal liberation in the terms that would later be defined by Frantz Fanon in his chapter 'On National Consciousness' in Les damnes de la terre (1961), did not accompany the emergence of Irish nationhood. Finnegans wake published in 1939, can be read as Joyce's mapping of the damaged terrain of a national consciousness, psychologically dominated by the Irish Free State polity and censoriousness of the Catholic Church of the 1930s. A brief exposition of the Parnell affair and its link to the emergence of a modern Irish consciousness expressed in the violence and literature of the fin de siecle, will presage a discussion of Joyce's last work.

Recently, the need to contribute to the evaluation of the scientific, social, and political impact of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) research has become a demand of policy makers and society. The international scientific community has made significant advances that have transformed the impact of evaluation landscape. This article reviews the existing scientific knowledge on evaluation tools and techniques that are applied to assess the scientific impact of SSH research; the changing structure of social and political impacts of SSH research is investigated based on an overarching research question: to what extent do scholars attempt to apply methods, instruments, and approaches that take into ac-count the distinctive features of SSH? The review also includes examples of European Union (EU) pro-jects that demonstrate these impacts. This article culminates in a discussion of the development of the assessment of different impacts and identifies limitations, and areas and topics to explore in the future.
