An account of the intimidation, rape, murder, & forced evacuation of the East Timorese following their vote for independence in Aug 1999. After outlining the violent postindependence past of East Timor & subsequent annexation by Indonesia, current problems in the country are explored, including extreme poverty, illiteracy, & large numbers of refugees.
