Consumer Heterogeneity and Surplus under Two-Part Pricing
In: The B.E. journal of theoretical economics, Band 18, Heft 2
ISSN: 1935-1704
Abstract
For many products, consumers need to sign a pricing contract with the seller under uncertainty about their future consumption needs. Recent empirical literature has consistently pointed out that consumers may not be good forecasters of their future consumption needs, and may suffer from overestimation or underestimation biases. This paper considers consumers who are heterogeneous in their expected demands arising from heterogeneity in their biases about their forecasted consumption needs. We show that the optimal menu of two-part pricing in this case leads to the lower-expected demand segment getting exactly the same surplus on the average as the higher-expected demand segment, or the higher-expected demand segment getting even lower surplus on the average than the lower-expected demand segment. We show directions of externalities these unbiased, positively-biased, and negatively-biased segments impose on one another, and how they can be different under no price discrimination, and second- and third-degree price discrimination.
Environmental Factors in Selection of Officers for Defence Services
This study points out the extent to which educational and socio-economic factors determine success at the Services Selection Boards for entry into the Indian Military Academy. Biographical questionnaries of 456 candidates are tabulated and statistically treated. Some of the factors are highly significant determinants of success. The findings are compared with a similar study carried out earlier on National Defence Academy entrants. The comparison points out the likelihood of these influences being superficial and temporary.

An attempt toward an integrated theory of consumer psychology and decision‐making
In: Systems research, Band 3, Heft 3, S. 161-175
AbstractThis paper makes an attempt to integrate a number of selected theories of motivation (performance) and satisfaction. Specifically, this was accomplished by (1) reviewing selected major theories dealing with these concepts (expectancy‐value theory, assimilation‐contrast theory, social comparison theory, exchange theory, discrepancy theory, decision‐making theory and self‐concept theory), (2) reviewing selected major theories linking performance with satisfaction (March and Simon's theory, Porter and Lawler's theory, cybernetics/control theory and Raynor's theory of motivation), (3) presenting a set of criteria for developing a general theory of motivation and emotion, (4) introducing a general theory of motivation and emotion (evaluative congruity theory) and (5) translating the concepts of the selected traditional theories of performance and satisfaction into the language of evaluative congruity theory.
