The Communication Service Providers (CSP) business is in turmoil. Telecom operators providing communication services constructed the infrastructure of the global information society with their trillion investments on various telecommunication technologies from broadband to mobile. Their investments on software turned their technology-specific in-house procedures into modern layered OSS/BSS. This book analyzes the status and the future evolution of OSS/BSS software industry from multiple viewpoints including technology diffusion, vertical disintegration and evolution of a vertical software industry. The analysis uses both commercial databases on software market transactions and interviews of operators in Europe and Far East, using quantitative and qualitative methods

Cities provide an excellent platform for gathering and detection of massive amount of data from cities and citizens. Emergence of new digital technologies inspires not only city governments but also city residents, researchers, companies and other stakeholders in discovering and creating new innovative solutions to solve urban challenges and improve peoples´ everyday life. Developing novel Internet of Things (IoT) solutions for cities and citizens requires facilities where IoT applications and services can be tested and experimented. The challenge for many smart-city test and experimentation platforms (TEPs), like living labs, has been the lack of sustainable value creation model. This has caused many experimentation platforms to perish after the ending of external funding. A vision about how to construct a robust and continuous IoT test and experimentation platform, as well as instruments for it, is required. The IoT service experimentation platform (IoT SEP) framework presented in this paper provides guidelines for this effort. PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate the internationalization behavior of knowledge‐intensive small‐ to medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs) by using macro‐level psychic distance indicators and managers' perceptions of psychic distance.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses both quantitative and qualitative approaches. In the quantitative approach, the impact of psychic distance to the internationalization behavior is analyzed by using bivariate correlation analysis. The qualitative case study approach is employed to investigate managers' perceptions of psychic distance as regards market entries.FindingsFindings of this study indicate that psychic distance has an impact on the market entry of knowledge‐intensive SMEs. However, there are other factors, such as market size, opportunity seeking behavior, and actions taken by managers, which make the effect of psychic distance less visible in macro‐level quantitative analyzes.Research limitations/implicationsThis study is limited by small sample size in both quantitative and qualitative studies. However, the findings offer interesting insights for further studies related to this phenomenon.Originality/valueThis study compares macro‐level and individual‐level analyses of psychic distance and indicates reasons why psychic distance should be analyzed with the help of individual‐level perceptions of psychic distance.

A vast variety of artificial intelligence techniques have been deployed to specific healthcare problems during the last thirty years with varying levels of success while there is a shortage of systematic matching of AI capabilities with the breadth of application opportunities. In this paper, we describe the process of identifying opportunities for deploying artificial intelligence to healthcare and social services on regional and national levels in Finland. The project involved a large number of stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds ranging from governmental agencies to entrepreneurs. The process described includes idea generation of an application or solution and its elaboration in workshops using a design thinking method. The resulting idea pool was filtered down to 34 best use case descriptions, which went through an architectural design process identifying AI capabilities needed in the components of these designs reported in this paper. The potential ones of the use cases were selected for prototype development. The subsequent steps in the process include feasibility prototypes and evaluation of the economic and business value of the solutions and applications. ; peerReviewed
