Ever since the early 1950s, after Chiang Kai-Shek and the Republic of China (ROC) had withdrawn to Taiwan following their defeat by the communists, there has been a movement for Taiwanese independence among the native Taiwanese. Several Christian organizations are supporting this movement. The study traces the support of these organizations, especially of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan, for the Taiwanese independence movement. ROC under great pressure to reunite with the communist government on the mainland. (DÜI-Sen)
