From the 6th to 11th centuries, the prohibition of marriage between relatives (incest) often headed the agenda of legislative assemblies and can be seen as a key topic of this age. The reasons for this unique development have occupied ethnologists, sociologists and historians for quite some time. This book is the first to trace the radical expansion of marriage prohibitions across epochs and advances the thesis that this development came about as a result of the decline of power in Antiquity and the changing functions of legislation.
; The treatise De regia potestate et papali by John of Paris is considered the most influential work on political theory written during the conflict between Philip the Fair and pope Boniface VIII. This importance stands out against John's earlier silence on political matters, when he taught philosophy and theology at the University of Paris. Why did John of Paris shift his focus to political philosophy? According to established opinion, the treatise was written in 1303 and was aimed to refute the papalist position of Gilles of Rome and the bull Unam Sanctam. This article, however, shows that John was the first theologian to intervene in the conflict and that, in turn, Gilles of Rome and the pope responded to the claims of the royal party. The first draft, written before April 1302, was used by Pierre Flote at the first National Assembly in Paris in order to buttress the royal claim to sovereignty. As a reward John obtained the long-awaited chair of theology at the University of Paris in 1304.

After the path-breaking research by J.G.A. Pocock and Q. Skinner, the history of republicanism has been intensively studied in recent years. In the case of Dante, C. Davis and P. Armour related the political philosophy of the Italian poet to the republican tradition. This article tries to identify the limits of republicanism in the hierarchical view of politics which Dante traced out. It is argued that Dante should rather be labelled as a Platonist than a Republican. His idealist method, his concept of a philosopher-king, his blending of ethics and politics, his approval of meritocratic leadership, his concept of liberty presents him as a follower of Platonism, even though he himself did not know any of Plato's political dialogues. Contrary to the elitism of Plato and Aristotle, Dante's universalist concept of mankind sets him off as an original thinker.
