Catalonia Dreaming : the Rise of Catalan Mass Secessionism, 2010-2015
What is happening in Catalonia? This is a commonly asked question, abroad and in Spain. Even Catalans are often bewildered by the fast tide of events surrounding the pro-independence movement and its contradictions. Local answers not only tend to be partial, and loaded with special-pleading, but present a complexity of intricate detail that is hard to follow for anyone not in living in Catalonia and very attentive to the flow of politics in the media. Spanish observers, as a rule threatened by ongoing events and therefore hostile, simplify to an extreme that can be obtuse. The author, not a native Catalan, is an historian specialized in the study of Catalan nationalism. He has taught in Barcelona universities for more than forty years, usually in the Catalan language. Contrarian by nature, he has tried hard to remain outside the partisan trenches, to avoid both the pressure of the often heavy-handed nationalist lobby and the counter-pressure that marks the discourse of persecution of the most outraged Spanish opposition. In his contribution here, Enric Ucelay-Da Cal presents a narrative in terms of party politics and the social trends that political organizations try to channel and represent. ; Què està succeint a Catalunya?

History, historiography and the ambiguities of Catalan nationalism
In: Studies on national movements, Band 1, Heft 1
ISSN: 2295-1466
In this essay, the author attempts to realise two different and not completely complementary objectives. On the one hand, his intention is to familiarise readers with the dynamics of Catalan history over time, as well as with the ways in which Catalan historians in particular have helped to shape and determine Catalan nationalist discourse. On the other hand, the author has tried to question the obsessively political nature of both national and nationalist historiography, and the numerous contradictions involved, especially when the object of study is as imprecise as any political projection or desire.

; Generally speaking, Spanish historians (and, of course, the foreign hispanists who, in such matters, trail after them) have not found it useful to read and profit from historians who are defined as "nationalist" (Le., who question the existence of a single and/or simple "Spanish nation" from the narrative perspective of other alleged "national entities" historically within "Spain". The response of Spanish historians to such a challenge has tended to be defensive, even aggressive, in the face of what is perceived to be an attack on the coherence of their field of study. The author of this essay, a Barcelona-based historian generally disliked by Catalán nationalist historians for his critical tone towards their historiographic production, sug-gests that such a closed and defensive posture by Spanish historians is a serious scientific or analytical mistake, as the criticism offered from the different perspective of "Hispanic" but "non-Spanish" (or even "anti-Spanish") historiographies is rich in insights, most precisely for practioners of "Spanish historiography", given their vested interest in understanding "Spain" and "Spanishness" as a field of study. The author offers some basic examples of useful "lessons" to be gleaned from the perspective of Catalán nationalist historiography.

ABSTRACT: The article analyzed the central role that Cuban nationalism played in the appearance and growth of contemporary nationalism in Spain. Both Spanish nationalism and peripheral nationalism, especially in Catalonia and the Basque Country, were determined by the nationalist model and forms that were pioneered in Cuba. Moreover, the confrontation between Cuban nationalism and the Spanish response was to establish the ideological lines of radicalization that would subsequently be repeated in metropolitan contexts. The deciphering of these determinations and these lines in the framework of the Cuban dimension of Spanish politics is thus the central theme of this study. Key words: Cuba, Spain, Empire, Cuban Nationalism, Peninsular Nationalism.
