"In the decades following India's opening to foreign capital, the city of Bangalore emerged, quite unexpectedly, as the outsourcing hub for the global technology industry and the aspirational global city of liberalizing India. Through an ethnography of English and Kannada print news media in Bangalore, this ambitious and innovative new study reveals how the expanding private news culture played a critical role in shaping urban transformation in India, when the allegedly public profession of journalism became both an object and agent of global urbanization. Building on extensive fieldwork carried out with the Times of India group, the largest media house in India, between 2008-2012, Sahana Udupa argues that the class project of the 'global city' news discourse came into striking conflict with the cultural logics of regional language and caste practices. On the rapidly expanding social media in India, online users are witness to a routine exchange of abusive terms and accusations with choicest swearwords hurled even for the seemingly non-inflammatory political debates. This article draws upon anthropology of insult to uncover the distinctness, if at all, of online abuse as a means for political participation as well as for the encumbering it provokes and relations of domination it reproduces as a result. In so doing, the article critiques the conception of ludic as anti-hegemonic in the Bakhtin tradition, and develops an emic term "gaali" to signal the blurred boundaries between comedy, insult, shame, and abuse emerging on online media, which also incite gendered forms of intimidation. Gaali, it argues, is best conceptualized through the metaphor of "sound" as distinct from what recent new media studies theorize as "voice."

Drawing on empirical explorations of rapid media expansion and urban transformation in India, this article builds a theoretical model of desire–visibility disjunction which seeks to overcome the limitations of a public–private division running through journalism literature. This framework, I suggest, could advance media theory by drawing attention to recent urban transformation, globalization and the specificities of news cultures in urban India. Insofar as urban economies are woven into the global networks of production and consumption in the latest phase of transnational capitalism, the desire–visibility framework built in relation to the Indian media could hold wider theoretical purchase for exploring the interface between journalism and the transforming urban landscapes of postcolonial societies.

The emergence of a modern public sphere is attributed, in part, to the expansion of the print media, with newspapers playing a key role in the formation of an 'imagined community', usually imagined as a national unity. However, the role of the press in the non-Brahmin movement in princely Mysore shows that rather than shaping the formation of a homogenous and expandable rational public, newspapers identified themselves with and promoted the causes of particular caste groups. This article examines the social and political conditions under which this distinct form of journalism evolved. By doing so, it engages with and extends the post-colonial critique of Habermas' idea of the 'public sphere' and modern notions of civil society.

In this article, we introduce the Special Section on Extreme Speech and Global Digital Cultures by developing the concept of "extreme speech." In addressing the growing cultures of online vitriol and extremism, this concept advances a critical ethnographic sensibility to situated online speech cultures and a comparative global conversation that moves beyond the legal-normative debates that have been dominant in North America and Europe. We demonstrate this intervention by highlighting three interlinked arguments: Extreme speech inhabits a spectrum of practices rather than a binary opposition between acceptable and unacceptable speech; the sociotechnological aspects of new media embody a context in itself; and the violence of extreme speech acts is productive of identity in historically specific ways. This approach entails a methodological move that takes account of the meanings online users attach to vitriol as historical actors. It thus allows for critical frameworks to emerge from emic terms of action rather than moral concepts superimposed from the outside. Ethnographic explorations of extreme speech, we suggest, open up a new avenue to critique the contemporary global conjuncture of exclusionary politics.

Extreme speech is a critical conceptual framework that aims to uncover vitriolic online cultures through comparative and ethnographic excavations of digital practices. It is not one more new definition or a term replaceable with extremist speech. Rather, it is a conceptual framework developed to foreground historical awareness, critical deconstruction of existing categories, and a grounded understanding of evolving practices in online communities, in ways to holistically analyze the contours and consequences of contemporary digital hate cultures. This framework suggests that the close contextualization of proximate contexts - of media affordances in use or situated speech cultures - should accompany deep contextualization, which accounts for grave historical continuities and technopolitical formations unfolding on a planetary scale. Through such elaborate forays into everyday practices and deeper histories, extreme speech theory proposes to nuance normative and regulatory efforts to classify and isolate hate speech and disinformation.
