In: Estudos econômicos, Band 46, Heft 4, S. 937-971
ISSN: 1980-5357

This article analyses postgraduate Tourism programs [masters and doctorate] in Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. The research is theoretically based on the sociology of knowledge, area that deals with the material conditions of production of scientific knowledge (Merton, 1974). In particular, the objective was to analyse the distribution of the educational offer in Tourism, at the postgraduate level, from its collective structures [university, bureaucracy, research groups], its characteristics and its functions, in order to identify which conditions these structures provide the scientific knowledge production process, based on the analysis of the subsystems of higher education in Tourism in each country. Methodologically, the research followed the mixed method, being quantitative and qualitative, conducted through a census of educational offer in tourism at postgraduate level in locus, from which derived a quantitative analysis on the structure and configuration [thematic areas, objectives, study plans, faculty, alumni profile, and research groups/projects] of these systems, followed by a qualitative analysis of course content [syllabus] itself. The results show to be recent creation of such an offer - the majority of programs have less than 10 years of existence. There is also a significant disproportionation in all countries in relation to the offer of graduation; besides being heterogeneous and its incipient knowledge production. Therefore, there are significant differences in education systems, policy orientations, and the objectives of educational institutions to define postgraduate Tourism education offerings differently in these countries.

This article seeks to promote a theoretical reflection on the prison heritage. Thereby, it is our intention to analyze critically the realities that surround the preservation and protection of this type of heritage and the possible new uses for the prison heritage in the city of Juiz de Fora [State of Minas Gerais, Brazil]. The methodological procedures were based on the analysis of academic production on this theme. Libraries and historical collections of the city were consulted, as well as Internet pages that contained relevant news and information about prison heritage. The analysis of the material shows that some buildings in the municipality were demolished, seeking to highlight the importance of public prison memory and the disregard that the prison heritage suffers in the contemporary context.

In: Rosa dos Ventos: revista do Programa de Pós-Graduação Mestrado em Turismo, Universidade de Caxias do Sul, Band 12, Heft 4, S. 839-859

Grounded Theory emerged as an appropriate research method for extracting from data concepts organized around basic categories that once integrated establish a substantive theory about the phenomenon. Internationally, Tourism researchers have been using Grounded Theory in their research, but in Brazil it has been scarcely used. Thus, this paper aims to present the foundations of Grounded Theory showing the similarities and differences between its three versions, and to point out how this methodology is used in Tourism research. This work is bibliographic making an integrative review of the theory. Grounded Theory has been shown to be appropriate for studying tourist experience, but its use may be expanded as it may be associated with other research methodologies such as ethnography, favoring the creation of substantive tourist theories or simply the appropriation of a theme in the early stages of the research.
Exploring Management Performance in Activities Characteristics of Tourism
In: Rosa dos Ventos: revista do Programa de Pós-Graduação Mestrado em Turismo, Universidade de Caxias do Sul, Band 13, Heft 1, S. 129-155
ISSN: 2178-9061
The objective of this paper was to identify the management practices performed by business directly related to tourism activity, within the scope of intra and intersectoral action of the links in the tourism supply chain. The studied sectors were Hospitality, Food & Beverages, Transportation, Travel Agencies and Attractions. Methodologically, the study was quantitative in nature, with a descriptive approach. The data were collected through a structured survey, applied to 85 managers of companies in the tourism sector in the city of Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais [Brazil]. It was observed that the Food & Beverage sector is the one that most needs innovation to face the lower longevity of the companies. Managers who choose to enter the Attraction, Food & Beverage and Travel Agencies sector will have to manage a greater diversity of products, which increases the complexity of their management. The Attractions sector proved the most structured sector when dealing with demand forecasting and quality management, while the food sector failed in collecting customer feedback and demand forecasting. Transportation travel agencies and transport companies have higher average remuneration than other sectors. Thus, this paper contributes by integrating a, so far, sparse literature and presenting variables that can be followed by managers of tourism businesses and public policies to monitor the performance of the sub-sectors.
