Precision spectroscopy in astrophysics: proceedings of the ESO/Lisbon/Aveiro Conference held in Aveiro, Portugal, 11-15 September 2006
In: ESO astrophysics symposia
"High-accuracy Doppler shift measurements and high-precision spectroscopy are primary techniques in the search for exo-planets." "Further extremely interesting applications include the analysis of QSO absorption lines to determine the variability of physical constants and the analysis of the isotopic ratios of absorption lines both in stars and in QSOs, and the determination of stellar oscillations through radial velocity measurements. Since the use of high-precision/resolution spectroscopy is closely connected to the ability to collect a large number of photons, the scientific domains using this technique benefit tremendously from the use of 8-meter class telescopes and will fully exploit the tremendous gain provided by future Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs). IR high-resolution spectroscopy should soon approach the same accuracy regime achieved in the optical range." "This volume covers the astrophysical and technical aspects of high-precision spectroscopy with an outlook to future developments, and represents a reference work for researchers in those fields."--Jacket
Sustainability Indicators and Statistical Information on Tourism in Portugal

The development of indicators to measure sustainable tourism and to assist in the decision-making process of tourism destination managers has been a constant concern of some international organizations. However, at the European Union level, the tourism statistics system only states that Member States should collect and transmit harmonized statistics on tourism demand and supply, not referring specifically to sustainable tourism indicators. The main objective of this article is to analyze the tourism statistics system in Portugal, from 2001 to 2018, in order to understand how sustainable tourism has been viewed at this level and in a country which tourism activity has evolved significantly. The study, exploratory in nature, used a longitudinal quantitative approach, by performing a content analysis of the activity reports of the National Institute of Statistics, as well as methodological documents of the statistical operations of tourism. The results show that, in Portugal, the statistical system lacks indicators to measure and monitor the sustainable development of tourism in the country.

This article has as main objective to identify and study the characteristics of university residences most valued by the students. The study is carried out in the university residences of an University, in Portugal, for a sample of 342 students being found statistically significant differences in preferences according to gender and the location of the residence outside or inside the university campus. Factor analysis reveals six determinants of student preference: the unique experience and living provided, interior and location amenities, academic performance, environmental awareness, safety, and social relationships. Fundamentally, it is observed that students prefer a residence near to the university and academic spaces and also close to the local markets.
